Argentina – Wales

Argentina Wales rugby tips

Argentina will host Wales on Saturday evening in San Juan, the Pumas playing their first match in the June test window, while Wales is coming after a win against South Africa last week in Washington.

Argentina had a rough couple of years and 2017 has been a below average season for them both at club level and at International level, where they lost all their matches in the Rugby Championship, and weren`t that great in the rest of the tests either. The Pumas weren`t that bad, but last year saw their progress halting and even taking a downturn. However, things seem different this year, with the Jaguares (which is basically Argentina’s national team) doing very well in Super Rugby, where they are on track to reach the playoffs.

Wales is coming after a 22-20 win over South Africa in Washington last week, but the main thing to be said here is that neither team was at full strength – in fact it was almost Wales “B” against South Africa “B”. The Welsh did not bring their strongest team for this American tour, and will field a weakened team against Argentina. The current roster did well to win against South Africa, but Wales was a bit lucky to escape with that win, as they were second best for 60 minutes or so, and were completely outplayed in the second half until a fluke late try got them the victory.

Team news & lineups:

Argentina will be close to full strength, with the lineup having great chemistry as the guys are playing week in week out together for the Jaguares. Wales will field a weakened lineup, with most of their top players having been left at home to rest, and this is close to looking like a Wales “B” team.

Argentina: 15 Emiliano Boffelli, 14 Bautista Delguy, 13 Matias Orlando, 12 Jeronimo de le Fuente, 11 Ramiro Moyano, 10 Nicolas Sanchez, 9 Gonzalo Bertranou, 8 Javier Ortega Desio, 7 Marcos Kremer, 6 Pablo Matera, 5 Tomas Lavanini, 4 Guido Petti, 3 Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro, 2 Agustin Creevy (c), 1 Santiago Garcia Botta

Wales: 15 Hallam Amos, 14 Josh Adams, 13 Scott Williams, 12 Hadleigh Parkes, 11 George North, 10 Rhys Patchell, 9 Gareth Davies, 8 Ross Moriarty, 7 James Davies, 6 Seb Davies, 5 Cory Hill (c), 4 Adam Beard, 3 Dillon Lewis, 2 Elliot Dee, 1 Wyn Jones

Argentina is looking good value to win this. They are better than this Wales “B” side, and they play at home, which always gives them a massive edge.

A very important fact is that the Argentinians are in the middle of their domestic season at club level, while the Welsh players have ended their club campaigns and are tired after a long season. Fitness and rhythm should be on Argentina’s side here, and these factors could gain even more importance due to the home court advantage – as the legs always tend to be more tired away, especially when you`re on another continent, which is the case for Wales.

Wales would need a better performance than the one they put against South Africa last week if they are to challenge for the win here, but even so Argentina should have enough at home. Note that the Welsh scrum was dominated by the Springboks, so their pack could be in for a very rough night against the famously strong Argentina forwards.

The Pumas players are in very good form right now and Argentina will be desperate for a rare win against a Tier 1 side, after coming close and losing for dozens of times in the last few years. The -6 point handicap on the hosts is tempting, but odds for the straight win are playable at 1.40 – 1.45, so I will stick with the safer bet. My tip is Argentina to win. Prediction: Argentina – Wales 31 – 21.

  1. I really fancy this one. Los Jaguares are on a 6 game hot streak in Super Rugby including wins in NZ & AUS and the team is packed with Pumas.

Will have a small handicap too.

    • Yep. I was going to go with the handicap but my mind kept saying “don`t ruin a good thing”, so I decided to play it safe.
