BATE – Videoton

BATE Borisov will look to finish off Videoton Fehervar, after drawing 1-1 on the road in the first leg of this Champions League 3rd qualifying round tie.

BATE is in great shape right now, playing very good football. They defeated Dundalk 2-1 aggregate in the previous round (could have won much more comfortable) and are dominating the Belarussian league – 12 wins and 2 draws in 14 matches, on the back of a 7-0 Cup win this weekend. BATE has a better team than last year, that is pretty much for sure and they will be confident of reaching the Champions League Group stage just like they did last season.

Videoton Fehervar continued its poor form in the first match with BATE, even though in all honesty it was one of the best matches they played all season, dominating the visitors for periods of time. On the other hand this was normal given that Videoton was trailing and they barely got the draw via a 90 minute equalizer. The Hungarians aren`t looking good right now, they won just two games all season (one of them over the weekend, 2-1 vs. Diosgyor) and were dreadful in the previous Champions League qualifying round, where they needed extra time to defeat Welsh Champions TNS.

The big news regarding the projected lineups is that Videoton will likely miss key defender and most reputable player, Roland Juhasz, injured in the first leg.

It`s true that both of Videoton’s wins this season came on the road, but none of those opponents was anywhere near BATE’s quality. The hosts are clearly the better side here, they are in better form and have a ton more of experience at this level, which always counts a lot in these kind of decisive matches.

Since losing to Porto in last years’ Champions League, BATE has 9 wins and 2 draws in 11 home matches. I am looking for them to control the match from the outset and get a comfortable win to qualify for the next round.
