Chelsea – Man Utd

chelsea manchester united preview mourinho

Jose Mourinho returns to Stamford Bridge to take on his former club in what will be a crucial meeting for both Chelsea and Manchester United.

Chelsea is coming after two wins to nil against Hull and Leicester, with the 3-0 drubbing of Leicester last round being particularly impressive. Conte’s side hasn’t been that great this season, but they are still sitting on the 5th place and a win would bring them right back into the title mix – especially after Arsenal and Tottenham both lost points this round.

United is on the back of a 4-1 home win over Fenerbahce in the Europa League, a breth of fresh air after a few below par results and performances. The Devils are 6 points behind league leaders Arsenal and that gap could be increased to 8 points if rivals Man City defeat Southampton earlier in the day. Needles to say, Mourinho can’t afford to lose against a Top 4 contender here, otherwise things will get really difficult for the underperforming United.

Team news & lineups:

Both teams are pretty much at full strength ahead of this game. Chelsea misses Zouma and Van Ginkel, while Manchester United misses Jones, but Mkhitaryan is also unlikely to feature, even though he`s back in training.

Chelsea: Courtois – Azpilicueta, Luiz, Cahill – Moses, Matic, Kante, Alonso – Willian, Costa, Hazard

Manchester United: De Gea – Valencia, Smalling, Bailly, Blind – Herrera, Fellaini – Martial, Pogba, Rashford – Ibrahimovic

A loss would be a huge blow for either side, especially for Manchester United. The team that loses would lose contact with the top teams in the table and I believe this will determine a very cagey, defensive match, with each time being desperate to gain at least a point

Knowing Mourinho and how he approaches these kind of games, there`s every chance he will try to defend and fragment the game, just like he did against Liverpool last round. Chelsea isn`t playing much more offensive football either, so considering this and the importance of the game, I can see both teams struggling big time to find spaces and create chances.

I expect a tense encounter played with fear of not losing, between two of the best defensive teams in the league. A very evenly matched clash as well, which always makes scoring more difficult. A bet against goals makes sense in my eyes, so when all is said and done, my tip here will be under 2,5 goals to be scored. Prediction: Chelsea – Manchester United 0-0.

Pick: under 2,5 goals
