Chelsea – Southampton

Mourinho Chelsea Southampton Premier League

Chelsea takes on Southampton at Stamford Bridge in a key Premier League encounter, as Chelsea is desperate to get out of the bottom half of the table, swapping places with today`s opponents Southampton in the process.

14th placed Chelsea has been criticized a lot lately, Mourinho is reported to be close to being sacked and the atmosphere is apparently poor, with the Portugese manager hinting that he has “snitches” in the locker room and that he never had a worse spell in his career. However, the situation is far from being so bad. Mourinho’s statements can not be taken seriously, as his mind games are notorious and usually of great effect. The 14th place is circumstantial, as the Blues are just 5 points behind the 3rd spot and Chelsea had a run of 3 consecutive wins before drawing at Newcastle and losing 1-2 in Porto (while resting 3-4 key starters) – not exactly horrible results. The start of the season is what hurt them, but that seems to be gone.

Southampton doesn`t seem able to produce the same level of football as in the last couple of seasons, and it`s only normal if we think how many players left the club. The Saints are currently 10th in the Premier League, on the back of a 3-1 win over Swansea and with interesting statistics on the road – 3 draws in 3 matches.

Team news & lineups:

Courtois and Diego Costa will not be in Chelsea’s lineup today, while Southampton will have to do without Fraser Forster and Florin Gardos.

Chelsea: Begovic – Ivanovic, Terry, Cahill, Azpilicueta – Matic, Fabregas – Pedro, Oscar, Hazard – Falcao (Remy)

Southampton: Stekelenburg – Cedric, Fonte, Van Dijk, Bertrand – Wanyama, Ward-Prowse – Tadic, Davis, Mane – Pelle

Chelsea is better than the media suggests and their recent form is actually not that bad. Chelsea defeated Arsenal 2-0 in the previous home game and I expect a similar result against a Southampton side that has lost virtually all its key players in the last two years and is not in great form.

I reckon there`s been a huge exaggeration in the media about Chelsea supposedly “bad form”, causing the odds to artificially go up close to evens – which is just wrong in my opinion. My tip is Chelsea to win, but keeping the stakes reasonable because you just never quite know for sure with this Southampton team. Chelsea should win though, they really need the three points and Southampton is not as scary as in the past. Prediction: Chelsea – Southampton 1-0.

  1. Supposedly “bad form” ? are you serious man? they won 4 games from last 10…are 14 th place in premier league. We are talking about of one of the most potent financialy club form the world. I mean what are we talking about, the numbers are talking. the should have lost all 10 games to conclusion they are in bad form? sorry but i disagree…sure they can beat 3-0 southampton today but right now they are in a bat shape..cheers

  2. and sorry from my bad english, i saw now i made some horrible gramatic mistakes 🙂

  3. I don`t agree, I guess it comes down to interpretation. Sure, the season was horrible so far, but I was talking more short term. Having watched them play in 3 of the last 5 matches, I believe Chelsea is playing decent – nowhere near the apocalyptic scenario described in the media.

Fortunately the stats are there for everyone to see and we can all draw our own conclusions. Cheers mate!
