Cristian Garin and John Isner will face off on Wednesday in the ATP Montreal Masters Series 1000 second round.
Garin was rather fortunate with his first round draw, playing against Djere, who is not really a big danger at this level on hard courts – and Garin did well to win 7-6 6-2. However, facing John Isner will be a totally different proposition, and Garin does not have much reason for optimism. He`s not a natural hard court player and came to Montreal in horrible form, losing 7 consecutive matches prior to his win over Djere.
John Isner got through a tough first round match against Jordan Thompson on Tuesday. Big John lost the first set, but pulled it together and eventually won 3-6 6-3 7-6 in a pretty good match. While Isner isn`t necessarily at his best level of play right now, he is playing pretty solid. He came back rather strong last month from his three month injury layoff, and even won the title at Newport on grass a few weeks ago. During this North American hard court swing he has 2 wins (Hurkacz, Thompson) and 2 losses (Opelka, Paire).

The surface will definitely favor Big John, as Garin is not a hard court player. He does have a 33-22 record on hard, but that was achieved at lower levels of competition, and he really doesn`t have many notable wins on this surface. This year, when he played at ATP level, he`s 3-5 on hard.
Garin had an excellent season on clay, but on hard courts against John Isner his chances seem really limited – especially considering he came to Montreal in horrible form with 7 consecutive losses. His win against Djere in the first round does not say much considering the average level of opposition. Djere had not even played on hard courts since early March.
Meanwhile, Isner looks like he`s getting better with each match he plays since coming back from injury at Wimbledon. He was pretty solid against Thompson in the first round, as Thompson played good tennis.
Isner also seemed very motivated on Tuesday. We have not seen Big John celebrate a first round win so exuberantly in a really long time, so he is clearly pumped up to claim some results during North American hard court series.
From Garin’s form, to the surface and the overall quality of the two players, there`s not much to suggest the Chilean can produce an upset in this match. You kind of know what to expect from Isner and his big serve right now, and it does not look like he will lose to a player like Garin.
