Czech Rep. – Turkey

Czech Republic Turkey Euro 2016 Arda Turan

Czech Republic and Turkey both need to win if they are to stand any chance of advancing to the Euro 2016 knockout stage. The Czechs have 1 point, while Turkey stands at zero points and did not even score a goal. Their chances of qualifying are slim, even with a win – they need to beat the Czech by at least 2-3 goals if they are to have a slight shot at going trough.

Czech Republic was denied a point by Spain via an 87th minute Pique goal for a 0-1 defeat. It was a surprisingly good defensive performance from the Czech Republic, a team that scored in bunches but also conceded a lot in the previous years. The Czechs managed to turn the tide in the next match and banged in a late goal themselves, claiming a 2-2 draw against Croatia after being down 0-2 at one point.

Turkey has looked really poor so far at these Euros, losing 0-1 to Croatia and 0-3 to Spain, putting in two weak and heartless performances. Their offense seemed completely lost in the wind and their defense was not much better, obviously. Arda Turan had a conflict with the fans and could quit the National Team, he is not expected to feature today. There has also been some talk about bonuses for qualification, so the atmosphere in the team is poor.

Team news & lineups:

Rosicky is out for the Czech Republic, while Dockal is questionable. Turkey could be without Arda Turan and Calhanoglu (who might be dropped to the bench).

Czech Republic: Czech – Kadarabek, Kadlec, Sivok, Limbersky – Plasil, Darida – Skalak, Kolar, Krejci – Skoda

Turkey: Babacan – Gonul, Hakan Balta, Topal, Erkin – Ozyakup, Sahin, Sahan – Mor, Yilmaz, Malli

Looking at this match, it seems all but over for Turkey, which has almost no chance to qualify, played very poorly so far and is in the middle of a bit of a scandal. However, the Turks have proved over the years that they must never be ruled out. This is a proud nation and I wouldn`t be shocked if they play an attacking game (which they need to do) and claim a positive result. Turkey can`t afford to play this safe, stay in the game and try to win it at the end – their only chance is to win this by about 3 goals difference. They will almost surely not pull it off, but they could try.

I can see at least a couple of goals being scored here. Czech Republic is an attacking team by definition and they are very shaky at the back, even if they looked Ok in the first match against Spain. Czech Republic proved able to create chances and score goals both in the qualifiers and in Euro 2016, so offense was never a problem for this side. It shouldn`t pe a problem against this Turkey side either.

On the other hand, Turkey looked very poor up front so far, but they have to go for it today and could be more dangerous against a mediocre defense like the one Czech Republic has.

The two teams met twice in the qualifying group, which Czech Republic won ahead of Iceland and Turkey. Both teams won on the road (Czech Republic 2-1, Turkey 2-0). I can see a similar result today. My tip is over 2,25 goals to be scored. Prediction: Czech Republic – Turkey 1-2.
