Mavericks – Hawks

Mavs Hawks handicapping

The Dallas Mavericks will take on the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday Night in Dallas.

The Mavs (14-11, 12-2 home) are playing some excellent basketball right now, and it is more than fair to say that they are one of the most in form teams in the NBA, if not THE most in form team. Dallas won 12 of its last 14 games (!!), and at home they won 10 straight! During this run many top teams fell victim to the Mavs (Warriors, Thunder, Celtics, Rockets, Clippers, Blazers), so there is definitely a ton of excitement at the moment in Dallas. Last time out, the Mavs demolished the Magic by 25 points on Monday.

The Hawks (6-20, 2-11 away) are on the back of a rare win in their last match, beating a shorthanded (but still strong) Nuggets side 106-98 at home. The match was on Saturday, so the Hawks had plenty of time to rest ahead of this clash with Dallas. Nevertheless, they remain one of the worst teams in the league, and putting in two consecutive solid performances will be a difficult proposition for them.

Team news: Smith Jr will miss his 4th game in a row, but the big news for Dallas is that veteran Dirk Nowitzki (questionable) might finally make his season debut. The Hawks will miss Poythress, Prince, Plumlee, Spellman and Lin – so they are struggling with injuries.

The Mavs are truly having an exceptional run right now. This group seems to have something special, as they continue to defy the odds. The best proof of this statement is not just the record of Dallas, but their incredible ATS record (against the spread).

The Mavs are the best ATS team in the league this season, covering the spread in 68% of their matches (17-8), which is an amazing statistic. In contrast with Dallas, the Hawks are the second worst team in the league at covering the spread (38.5%, 10-16). These stats alone suggest that a bet on the Mavs make sense.

The Hawks also have a -10.3 points per game differential, which is the third worst in the NBA, and away from home they have a -11.8 points differential / game.

With this in mind, and taking into account that Dallas is 12-2 at home with 10 wins in a row (+9.4 pts differential / game at home), also adding Atlanta’s lengthy injury list, one might wonder how in the hell are the Mavs just 9 point favorites.

Stats and common sense definitely suggest the spread should be in double digits here. The Mavs keep being underrated, as their ATS record clearly proves, and unless it will be “just one of those games” (which is always a possibility), they should win this easily. My tip will be Dallas to cover the 9 point (asian) handicap. Prediction: Dallas Mavericks – Atlanta Hawks 120 – 98.
