Ferrer – Nishikori

Ferrer Nishikori betting previewDavid Ferrer will take on Kei Nishikori in what looks to be the most balanced 4th round encounter on this late Sunday / early Monday at the Australian Open.

David Ferrer wasn’t quite at his usual best last year, but boy did he turn it up this season! Still undefeated in 2015, the spaniard won the title at Doha with a 2 set win over red hot Tomas Berdych and kept up the same form and intensity here at the Australian Open. Ferrer did lose a set in each of his three matches against Bellucci, Stakhovsky and Simon so he did have some small blips, but he ended up winning all matches easily, playing mostly his absolute best tennis. David was particularly impressive against an in-form Simon in the third round, showing fantastic consistency in rallies both on offense and defense.

Nishikori lost a close match to Raonic in the semifinals at Brisbane, playing very well and just like Ferrer he`s keeping the level up here at the Open. Kei had a similar road with Ferrer so far, having some small dips in form, losing a set against each of Dodig and Johnson, but generally playing excellent tennis. The Japanese is expected to be a Grand Slam contender this year after last years’ run to the US Open final, but he is yet to meet a top class opponent so far here in Melbourne.

Nishikori leads the H2H 6-3 (4-3 on hard) and most importantly he won all 4 meetings last year. This might suggest a matchup advantage for him and the odds are surely taking these recent H2H meetings into account. However, all 4 meetings last year went to the wire, needing a deciding set and often being filled with drama – Kei was just the better player last season and had some luck to emerge as the winner in all 4.

I like Ferrer’s chances here. He’s playing just as well as Nishikori, arguably even better considering he won a title this year and managed to overcome a classy opponent in Gilles Simon. There`s just no way Nishikori should be priced so low, This is a 50-50 match with an edge to Ferrer due to the superior consistency he showed in the start of the season. Look for a thriller with a lot of breathtaking rallies, it might go down to the wire again where I`ll give David the first chance – mainly due to his experience and consistency, but he`ll also be fired up to finally get one over Kei after last years’ meetings.

Age is not a factor when we`re talking about the fittest player on tour, so my tip here is Ferrer to win. Prediction: David Ferrer – Kei Nishikori 6-4 6-3 2-6 6-7 6-4.
