Thiem – Cuevas

Thiem Cuevas Roland Garros tipsTwo red hot players in Dominic Thiem and Pablo Cuevas will take on the court in an evenly matched Roland Garros second round.

Thiem is on the back of an impressive title run in Nice, defeating some top or / and in form players like Isner and Leonardo Mayer to grab his first ever ATP title. Thiem really played some of the best tennis he ever played, as his road to the final was not an easy one, but he made it look so. The young Austrian did not seem fatigued or drained as he came to Paris, beating Bedene in 4 sets to open his 2015 Roland Garros campaign.

Pablo Cuevas already played two ATP level finals on clay this season, winning in Sao Paolo and losing to Federer in Istanbul and he really is one of the in form clay courters of 2015. However, Cuevas wasn`t quite able to take it to the next level and challenge the better players in bigger tournaments. He had a good match in the first round here in Paris, defeating Sam Groth in 4 sets, never looking in danger of losing – 6-7 6-3 6-3 6-3.

This will be the first meeting between the two players. There`s not too much to be said about the matchup, the two are pretty similar in terms of playing style. The surface also suits both of them, Cuevas is a natural clay courter while Thiem is an all rounder with a very good game for the red dirt.

Thiem is the more talented player here and he is in better short term form as well after his brilliant week in Nice. However, Cuevas is a seasoned clay courter, he looks to be in good form himself and won’t hand the Austrian an easy win – especially if Dominic will start to feel some fatigue after playing so many matches in a row.

I do expect Thiem to edge this, but my main expectation is a tight, hard fought match. There`s little separating these two right now, they are both playing good tennis and I can’t see any one of them getting beat easily or giving up on a single game. The under over line is pretty decent at 38 games – there should be at least 4 sets here, if not 5 – and 38 games is low enough to be covered in 4. All in all, my tip is over 38 games. Prediction: Dominic Thiem – Pablo Cuevas 6-3 7-6 2-6 4-6 6-3.
