FCSB – Viktoria Plzen

FCSB Viktoria Plzen betting preview

FCSB from Romania and Viktoria Plzen from the Czech Republic will square off in the first leg of the Champions League qualifying third round, non – Champions route.

FCSB finished second last year in Romania and started the current season with two narrow wins, but their level of play was far from impressive. FCSB was fortunate to win both games against modest opposition and so far the team isn`t clicking after a fairly active transfer campaign in the Summer. The biggest (potential) problem for the Romanians is that they hired an inexperienced manager who was brought in solely on the basis that he will set up the team as the owner orders.

Current Czech Republic vice champions Viktoria Plzen enter this tie against FCSB as slight favorites, but they have one clear disadvantage ahead of the first leg – having not yet played an official match this season. Plzen didn`t have great success in friendlies, though that is never a relevant thing to take into account. The visitors haven`t lost any notable players in the Summer, but didn`t make noteworthy signings either, although they did bring in Ales Cermak from Sparta Prague.

Team news: FCSB will have a full squad at their disposal, while Viktoria Plzen is generally healthy as well according to reports.

While Plzen is the better team here, and certainly the better glued / more cohesive side, the difference isn`t that big. As such, it will be difficult for the visitors to impose their game considering this will be their first official match of the season, with FCSB already playing twice.

Fellow Czech side Sparta Prague was in a similar situation with Plzen last year, having played FCSB at the same stage in the same competition, and FCSB won that 3-1 aggregate (1-1, 2-0).

On the same note of past results, it has to be said that Plzen encountered Romanian teams twice in the last 4 years, and each time they were knocked out despite being the favorites: 1-4 and 1-1 vs Petrolul (2014), 1-2 and 1-1 vs Astra (last season). Each time Plzen drew away and lost at home.

While past outcomes have no impact on future ones, these are all recent results which deserve at least a little bit of attention, painting an image (although incomplete) of the matchup between Czech football vs. Romanian football.

All things considered, an away win doesn`t look particularly likely here. However, FCSB is playing poor football right now and they are the slightly inferior team, so them claiming a victory at home against decent opposition is pretty hard to imagine as well.

I reckon the most likely result is the draw, and betting on it is the logical choice here. I can see a tactical focused game with both teams being cautious and scared not to fall behind ahead of the second leg. Prediction: FCSB – Viktoria Plzen 1-1.
