Gael Monfils will take the court against his friend and countryman Gilles Simon, as the two frenchman will seek qualification to the Wimbledon 4th round.
Monfils is yet to lose a set so far this week and after his easy win over Carreno Busta, he delivered a clinical performance to defeat Adrian Mannarino 7-6 6-3 7-5. It was a simple and effective performance against a good player, even though probably Mannarino could have snatched a set. Monfils is in very good form for a couple of months now and he had a very solid campaign on grass, reaching the semifinals at Stuttgart (lost at Nadal) and the QF’s at Halle (retired vs. Seppi).
Simon has been surprisingly good on the green this year, given that grass is not really his favorite surface. However, he did seem unable to pass that final hurdle, losing to Anderson in the Queens semifinals and to Querrey in the Nottingham quarters, each time in three sets. His best win came against Milos Raonic. Gilles is playing good tennis this week at Wimbledon, beating Almagro 6-4 6-4 7-5 and Kavcic with a strange 6-1 6-1 6-7 6-1. The level of opposition was poor though and Monfils will be a different matter.

The pair never met on grass, but even so the Head 2 Head could be a big factor in this one. Gilles Simon leads 6-1 (one of the matches was in the French domestic league), including a win this year at Montpellier. Obviously Monfils doesn’t like his style and Simon will look to capitalize on the matchup yet again. It has to be said though that all matches were tight, only one of them ending with a straight sets win.
It does seem that Monfils is playing slightly better this week and it has more to do with the fact that, surprisingly, he seemed more consistent than Simon. Gilles had ups and downs in the whole grass court season and he`s also a bit more “unfriendly” with grass than Monfils – who is solid on the surface, despite not liking it.
Monfils is the slightly better player, looks to be in slightly better form and it can be said that he`s slightly better on this surface, but the Head 2 Head can well turn the situation in favor of Simon, because after all styles make matches. It`s really hard separating this two and we will most likely see a long match – with the Head 2 Head suggesting this as well.
The under over line is set at 40.5, which is a bit high for my taste and could very well not be covered in 4 sets, so I will go with a safer bet – over 3,5 sets. The odds are just good enough to warrant the investment. All in all, my tip for this encounter is over 3,5 sets to be played. Prediction: Gael Monfils – Gilles Simon 2-6 6-3 6-4 6-7 6-4.
