Vesely – Delbonis

Vesely Delbonis Rio De Janeiro analysis

Jiri Vesely and Federico Delbonis will square off in the first round at the Rio de Janeiro Brazilian Open, played on outdoor clay.

Vesely had a quarterfinal showing in Auckland earlier this year, but aside from that he didn`t have any success in these early months of the season. The Czech player played moved from hard courts to clay last week, but his first and only match on the surface was a total failure, as he was defeated 0-6 3-6 in the Buenos Aires first round by Aljaz Bedene.

Delbonis played at Buenos Aires himself last week, and he lost to Bedene as well, but in a three setter in the semifinals – after previously defeating Florian Mayer, Gastao Elias and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in straight sets. Delbonis started this year with three losses on hard courts but once he moved on clay he immediately found his form, and he will look to replicate last week`s semifinal showing here in Rio de Janeiro.

Vesely leads the H2H 2-1 (2-0 on clay) and won the last meeting less than one year ago in the Prostejov challenger final. All three matches were extremely close and needed a deciding set to be settled, so no player holds a matchup advantage over the other. Also, both are great on clay, although Delbonis is more natural on the surface than Vesely.

Delbonis played 4 times in Rio De Janeiro and he never lost in the first round. He will surely fancy his chances here in South America against an opponent who seems totally out of form based on his most recent showing.

Vesely was absolutely dreadful last week against Bedene, looking unfit, and while you would expect some improvement this week, it`s unlikely he can make such a giant leap in just a few days – because a giant leap would be needed against an in form clay court expert like Delbonis.

Having watched these two play in Buenos Aires last week it`s hard to see anything else other than a Delbonis win here.

Yes, surely Vesely can`t play as bad as last week and it might not be completely straightforward for Delbonis, given the H2H history. But Delbonis should be the more steady competitor over the duration of the match, committing less errors, and eventually qualifying for the second round.

All in all, my tip will be Delbonis to win, and my analysis suggests that 8 unit stake on this bet makes sense. It has to be said that odds on a Delbonis victory are dropping big time at the moment. Prediction: Jiri Vesely – Federico Delbonis 7-6 4-6 4-6.
