Jordan Thompson and John Isner will square off on Tuesday in the first round at the ATP Masters Series event in Montreal, Canada.
Since reaching the final on grass in Hertogenbosch back in June, Thompson has been in pretty shaky form. He had a run of 4 consecutive losses, including a defeat against Norrie in his first match back on hard courts in Atlanta, before reaching the third round last week in Washington. It was a better showing for Thompson last week (albeit not spectacular), as he claimed wins against Sock and Struff before losing a pretty competitive two setter against Tsitsipas.
Big John Isner recently won the title at Newport a few weeks ago, but didn`t quite yet find his rhythm on hard courts. He lost his opening match in Atlanta against Opelka, although that was understandable after a long week in Newport – and Isner arguably should have won against an in form player. Next up came a third round loss in Washington. Isner looked great in his first match against Hurkacz, but surprisingly lost to Paire.

This North American hard court swing has always been one of Isner`s best times of the year, and this week he does have a Round 16 showing to defend from last year.
Meanwhile, Thompson has not been particularly impressive lately, and there`s a real questionmark if his style can work against Big John.
You also have to look at Thompson and consider he hasn`t beaten a Top 20 caliber player since God knows how long … Kchachanov in Miami earlier this year, and that`s about it. He`s not really a guy who is known for springing big upsets.
While Isner may not quite be in his top form, he is playing well enough to be able to take care of Thompson here. And you would expect Big John to only get better as the hard court season progresses and he adds matches under his belt. We must not forget that he had a 3 month layoff prior to Wimbledon, so maybe that had an impact on his first few matches back from injury – although he still returned at a pretty high level.
