Anderson – Isner

Big servers Kevin Anderson and John Isner will square off in the Wimbledon semifinals on Friday afternoon.

Anderson has played good tennis in this tournament and is coming after a magnificent comeback victory against main favorite Roger Federer. The South African was down 2-6 6-7 4-5, facing match point on his serve, but somehow managed to turn the clash around for a 2-6 6-7 7-5 6-4 13-11 win. While Federer didn`t play very well in the last two sets, Anderson was still at a very high level, also showing some amazing mental fortitude.

Isner is also coming after a very solid victory in the quarterfinals. While his 3-1 win over Raonic might not have been as impressive as Anderson’s performance against Federer, that does not take away from the fact that Isner played some great tennis against the Canadian to win 3-1. In fact, Isner has been exceptional from the start of the tournament, particularly on serve. The American is still yet to lose his serve in this year`s Wimbledon, and he faced just 7 break points total in his wins over Maden, Bemelmans, Albot, Tsitsipas and Raonic.

Isner leads the H2H 8-4 (1-0 on grass), and you could even say he actually leads 8-3 considering that one of Anderson’s win came in Hopman Cup, which is more like an exhibition tournament. Isner also won the previous 4 meetings, losing just one set in the process. It seems like he has a matchup advantage over Anderson, but on the other hand the last meeting was back in 2015, and Anderson is now a much better player.

Both guys are playing some of their best tennis right now, they are competing at a very high level and it`s hard to see any one of them going down without a fight. They are playing at a similar level, so it looks like it could be a very close match. And when you add the fact that both are huge servers, you would expect a lot of games to be played.

As previously said, Isner has been unbelievable on serve in this tournament, he still has not been broken, and allowed just 7 break points in 5 matches (and 18 sets of tennis)! Anderson did allow 9 breaks of serve (7 of them against Monfils and Federer), but he is still a big server. Against eachother, these two should blow aces all over the place and find it very hard to get opportunities on the return.

With both players in top form and with both players being big servers, betting on over 46 games to be played seems like a good idea. You would expect this match to have 4 sets, if not 5, and at least a couple of tiebreaks. The 46 games total could be covered (or void) even in 4 sets with 2 tiebreaks with a bit of luck.

Given the H2H and Isner’s brilliance on serve I tend to give him the edge despite Anderson beating Federer, but my tip here will be over 46 games to be played. Prediction: Kevin Anderson – John Isner 6-7 7-6 6-4 6-7 5-7.
