Klizan – Monfils

Klizan Monfils Roland Garros prediction

Best bet of the second round of Roland Garros has to be Klizan v Monfils in my opinion, value-wise. The meeting is between #117 in the world, Slovakian Martin Klizan (a former #24) and the home-crowd favorite #37, French Gael Monfils (former #6).

Fact is that Klizan is the kind of player that can defeat ANYBODY on his day, but his main kryptonite is the consistency for sure. He stated last year that he doesn’t like playing tennis anymore, but does it for the money. Last year’s results can show that, as he was negative 17-21. This year his money got tight, joking, as he has proven that he can play once again. His record this year is a stunning 30 wins and 8 losses. His recent form is stunning, reaching the QF in Barcelona (lost 6-0 7-5 to Nadal and he had 3 set points ON SERVE in set 2), QF in Munich, and here got through the qualifications and won his 1st round match against Djere.

His results in French Open are relatively mediocre, but he had some nice results during the years: Took set of Nadal in 2013, defeated Nishikori in 2014, took set of Murray in 2017.

Monfils on the other hand had some great results in French Open during the years, and the crowd support is amazing really for this showman. He had reached he SF in 2008, QF in 2009, 2011 and 2014 and the R16 in 2006, 2015 and 2017. This is not that important in this match-up in my opinion.

The H2H is 1-1 and both matches have been played on hard courts, but only one in last 10 years, in 2016 in Rotterdam where Klizan demolished Monfils in the final 6-7 6-3 6-1.

I remember that year and that tournament as I had Klizan to win it 40/1 outright. He has played some stunning tennis, comparable to his form right now (but back then being more consistent).

Monfils isn’t in his best physical state as he had knee problems after US Open 2017 and got back in January, won Doha and after that everything seemed to go downwards. He lost to Djokovic in AO (injured Djokovic), Monteiro in Quito, Thiem (6-2 6-1) in Buenos Aires, Schwartzman in Rio, Zeballos in Sao Paulo, Herbert in Indian Wells, Basic in Munich, Nadal in Madrid, Fognini in Rome and Marterer in Lyon. You can see to which players he lost and that is sort of a statement to see how bad he does. He won his 1st round match here with difficulties, losing set to Benchetrit and taking medical time out during the match. He said that he felt dizzy and that he took some pills before the match because of his pain.

Klizan won his 1st round match against Djere in 4 sets too.

This match will be won in 4 or 5 sets in my opinion, by Klizan. But I would like to go the safe way and bet the asian handicap of 3.5 at 1.81 from Pinnacle which is a good backup in case of an eventual loss in 5 sets. I am pretty confident that Klizan will win this match tho.

Pick: Klizan +3,5 games
Odds: 1.81 @ Pinnacle

Possible profit: 6.48
