Ebden – Gojowczyk

Ebden Gojowczyk betting preview

Matthew Ebden and Peter Gojowczyk will both attempt to reach their first ever career ATP final, as the two in form players meet in the semifinals at Newport.

Ebden didn`t come to Newport in the best form, although he had a reasonably successful grass court season, reaching the main draw in a couple of ATP events – But the Australian really stepped up his game this week. After passing the qualifiers, he defeated Newport legend Rajeev Ram and Lukas Lacko with ease, going on to beat an in form Kamke (2-1) in the quarterfinals as well – playing some really great tennis along the way.

Gojowczyk had a reasonably good grass court season himself, reaching the second round at Stuttgart and Wimbledon, posting a couple of Top 100 wins as well. Here in Newport Gojowczyk got past Kwiatkowski before having problems in a 2-6 6-4 6-4 win against Konstantin Kravchuk. His biggest achievement came in the quarterfinals, where he dodged a match point to defeat reigning champion Ivo Karlovic 7-6 6-7 7-6.

The H2H is 0-0, as this will be the first meeting between Ebden and Gojowczyk. The fast courts at Newport favor both of them, each one of them being a solid grass court player.

Gojowczyk’s win over Karlovic on Thursday was no doubt impressive, but fact is the German was extremely lucky to escape with that result. Gojowczyk failed to obtain a single break point, while Karlovic had one in each set and also missed a match point.

The German is no doubt playing very good tennis, but it`s not like he`s painting the lines. He had many ups and downs during the tournament and he definitely got lucky to reach the semifinals.

Meanwhile, Ebden seems to be on a mission, as he was excellent in all three matches played here and is playing the exact brand of tennis which you need to be successful on the fast courts in Newport. He was very close to defeat against Kamke (4-6 7-6 6-4), but Kamke is a player that also found his groove here in Newport – having defeated Mannarino in two sets before losing to Ebden.

When all is said and done, Ebden simply played the better tennis this week and has been more consistent. He is in the zone and is at a tournament – winning level, while Gojowczyk, despite playing well himself, is looking more vulnerable. Having watched the two guys play, I reckon Ebden is the player to beat here.

My tip on this clash is Matthew Ebden to win. It could be close, but I trust my analysis, which suggests the Australian has the first chance here. I feel odds on this bet definitely have some great value. Prediction: Matthew Ebden – Peter Gojowczyk 3-6 6-3 6-4.
