Grizzlies – Spurs

Grizzlies Spurs prediction

The Memphis Grizzlies and the San Antonio Spurs will meet for the second time in three days, after the Spurs claimed a 9 point win against Memphis on Wednesday night.

The Grizzlies (7-13, 4-7 home) are in total disarray, having lost 9 straight games and currently operating under interim coach JB Bickerstaff – after they surprisingly fired David Fizdale earlier in the week, presumably star center Marc Gasol being involved in the sacking. All these issues have started once Memphis lost their superstar point guard Mike Conley a few weeks ago, as they just couldn`t find a way to win without him.

The Spurs (14-7, 4-5 away) are still waiting for the return of their go-to guy Kawhi Leonard, who hasn`t played so far this season and is expected back soon, but not tonight. Nevertheless, Popovich`s well oiled machine has been just fine without Kawhi, posting an impressive 14-7 record, including 5 wins in their last 6 games, and three straight. Things are looking bright, particularly as San Antonio finally got their starting point guard Tony Parker back from a long term injury a couple of games ago.

Team news: Memphis continues to miss Conly and Selded, but they also deal with fitness issues regarding Chalmers, Wright and Parsons – neither being at 100%. The Spurs only have to deal with the long term absences of Kawhi Leonard and Derrick White, a rookie.

Memphis did reasonably well to lose by just 9 points in San Antonio two nights ago (when they didn`t have Chalmers and Parsons), but the Grizzlies shot 50% from three point range in that game (11-22), which was completely out of the ordinary for a team which is second to last in the NBA in three point percentage (33%). If they had shot at their usual percentage, they would have lost by 20+ points.

It`s highly unlikely that Memphis can repeat that three point percentage tonight, so they will have to find points from somewhere else, but that has not been easy without Conley, as Memphis’ entire offense is built around his playmaking.

The Grizzlies will eventually find a way to win a game without Conley, but it`s unlikely for that to happen when they are dealing with other players not being 100% fit, with internal bickering, and playing against a solid team like the Spurs.

Spurs are just much better and better organized at the moment and surely Gregg Popovich knows how to take advantage of the volatile situation Memphis is in, and proved it two nights ago at home.

My tip is San Antonio to cover the 3 point (asian) handicap. Odds might go up a bit as news about Chalmers, Parsons and Wright being available for MEM just came out recently – so maybe place your bet closer to game time. Prediction: Memphis Grizzlies – San Antonio Spurs 97 – 107.
