Moto GP Misano 2018

Misano 2018 preview Rossi Marquez

The 2018 Misano Moto GP race will take place Sunday in San Marino, and Jorge Lorenzo is the current favorite to win the event. The race has been hyped up after the events earlier in the week, when Valentino Rossi refused to shake Marc Marquez`s hand in a press conference.

Lorenzo claimed pole position on Saturday with a record breaking time of 1:31.629, almost three tens of a second faster than the second place – a time which can be translated as complete domination. He was also near the top in the free practices on Friday, which were dominated by fellow Ducati rider Andrea Dovizioso.

The next 6 positions on the starting grid will be completed, in order, by Jack Miller, Maverick Vinales, Andrea Dovizioso, Marc Marquez, Cal Crutchlow and Valentino Rossi. It`s fair to say that these are the only riders with any realistic chances to win the race, barring a miracle.

Marc Marquez is well in control of the World Championship at this point, standing 59 points ahead of the second placed Valentino Rossi, but Ducati and especially Jorge Lorenzo have been on an upward trend recently. Lorenzo won 3 of the last 6 races, adding a second place finish in this timespan, and he also won the previous race in Austria. There`s little doubt that right now Ducati is the bike to beat, and Lorenzo is the rider in the best form (although Marquez is right there, as always) – something which was definitely proved by his dominating display in qualifying.

Lorenzo is well known as one of the best front runners in Moto GP history, he has an excellent conversion rate of pole positions into victories, and when he gets a head start he is very difficult to overtake. That becomes even more true when you take into account that Misano is one of his favorite hunting grounds, Lorenzo winning on this track 4 times, three times at Moto GP level (although his last win here came in 2013).

There`s also the fact that the starting grid looks tailor made to give Lorenzo a head start here. He shouldn`t have much opposition from his front row colleagues Miller (his 2nd place time was a huge surprise) and Vinales (given Yamaha`s current struggles). But perhaps the most important thing is that Marc Marquez crashed in qualifications and will only start 5th. The other main rivals, Dovizioso and Rossi, will start 4th and 7th.

Taking into account the above facts, and looking at how Lorenzo dominated the qualifications, you could see him breaking out of the pack and cruising to victory here. He was by far the fastest rider on Saturday and if he doesn`t mess up the start, there`s no reason to expect a brilliant frontrunner such as him to make any mistake during the race.

Even if the mighty Marc Marquez would manage to get behind Lorenzo at one point, Marquez might settle for second, as he has no reason to force the issue (especially after he crashed in qualies).

This really looks like the perfect race for Lorenzo, it`s almost as if the stars aligned to give him the best chances to win. While there will always be unpredictability in Moto GP, Lorenzo is the man to beat here, everything points in his favor and I reckon odds from 1.90 or so and above are well worth the risk. My tip is Jorge Lorenzo to win the race.
