Real Madrid – Atletico

Real Madrid Atletico Madrid Super Cup tips

Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid will square off in the UEFA Super Cup, set to be played at the A. Le Coq Arena in Tallinn, Estonia.

Real Madrid has undergone massive changes this Summer, the main one of course being the loss of Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus. The team also changed the manager after Zidane’s resignation, bringing in Julien Lopetegui, so this is set to be a beginning of a new era for the Los Blancos side. This statement is supported by the signings made by Real, which brought in three young players as the main signings: Vinicius Junior, Thibaut Courtois and Alvaro Odriozola.

Atletico Madrid actually spent the same amount of money as Real Madrid this Summer, which is not something you see every year. Atleti’s fans will definitely be elated with the club resigning Antoine Grizmann and bringing in Thomas Lemar from AS Monaco, along with some other very interesting players (Rodri, Kalinic, Martins, Arias, Castro) – while also not losing any key pieces. Atletico didn`t have the best results in preparation (in contrast with Real, which played better), but pre-season results are never really relevant.

Team news & lineups:

Real Madrid will miss Odriozola and Vallejo. Courtois (just signed) and Modric (just returned from holiday, unhappy) are also unlikely to start. Atletico Madrid has a full squad available, including Griezmann, even if he played in the World Cup final. The French ace is expected to start and will at worst come off the bench.

Real Madrid: Navas – Carvajal, Ramos, Varane, Marcelo – Kroos, Isco, Casemiro – Bale, Benzema, Asensio

Atletico Madrid: Oblak – Juanfran, Godin, Gimenez, Luis – Niguez, Rodri, Koke, Lemar – Griezmann, Costa

Real Madrid obviously remains an exceptionally strong side despite the Summer moves. However, losing a player like Cristiano Ronaldo, around which the entire gameplan was built, is sure to have some effects on team chemistry and playing relations, not to mention how much his sheer quality will be missed. The fact that Modric (arguably Real`s second most important player and their midfield mastermind) could miss out will make things even more difficult. And, to top it off, the team has a new manager.

In these conditions it is more than fair to expect Los Blancos to have some problems with cohesiveness, chemistry, and with building their offense, as they will basically need to revamp the way they play.

A team like Atletico Madrid, well disciplined, cohesive and perfectly organized, looks like the perfect opponent to capitalize on Real Madrid’s situation. Surely Atleti will feel this is a fantastic chance to finally get one over their rivals in Europe, after narrowly losing for a few times recently in the Champions League.

My tip here will be Atletico Madrid X2 double chance (same as +0,5 handicap), Simeone’s system should frustrate this new look Real Madrid side, especially with this being the first match for Los Blancos in the current configuration. Prediction: Real Madrid – Atletico Madrid 1-2.
