Haase – Copil

Haase Copil Sofia prediction

Robin Haase and Marius Copil will square off on Wednesday afternoon in the first round at the ATP 250 event held in Sofia, on indoor hard.

Haase started the season with two solid results in Pune (QF’s) and Auckland (SF’s), but suffered a disappointing exit in the first round at the Australian Open against Sonego. The Dutchman played Davis Cup over the weekend in France, losing both matches, but he showed a high level of tennis against both Gasquet (a close 1-3 defeat) and Mananrino (an even closer 2-3 loss).

Marius Copil reached his highest career ranking of No.74 in the late month of last year, mostly due to his performances at challenger level. Unfortunately for him, Copil didn`t show his best tennis so far this year, losing both matches he played. He lost in the first round in Pune against Djere, and also lost in straight sets to Simon at the Australian Open. He did claim two big Davis Cup wins last weekend against Luxembourg, but those can`t really be taken into account, as he played opponents which weren`t even ranked.

This will be the first H2H meeting between Haase and Copil. Both guys have big serves, so the match should mostly stay on serve considering the fast surface in Sofia. The indoor conditions should help Copil, as indoor hard is by far his best surface.

Haase has been in good form overall this year, playing good tennis, his only hiccup being that first round exit at the Australian Open. He played well this past weekend in Davis Cup action, but those two long matches might have a negative effect on him. Two days of rest should be enough to recover, but traveling and playing in Eastern Europe will still not be easy.

Unlike Haase, Copil didn`t spend much energy last weekend in the Davis Cup, his two matches lasting less than 2 hours combined. Also, he only had to travel a few hundred Km’s to Sofia, as Bulgaria is a neighbour country to Copil’s Romania.

Copil will also be very happy with the indoor conditions, as he always raises his level on this surface. His game is perfectly suited his indoor hard and all of his top results came in these conditions.

That being said, Haase is still the clear cut favorite, as he is the better player and showed better tennis this year. But with Copil being more fresh and loving hard indoors, and considering both players have big serves (plus the fast surface), chances are Copil will be able to keep this close. He should push one or two sets to a tiebreak, and maybe win one.

My tip here is over 23 games to be played and odds on this bet are currently going down pretty much everywhere. If you can`t find the over 23 games bet (though you should), I`d rather take the over 22.5 at slightly lower odds, instead of taking the over 23.5, which would be more risky. Prediction: Robin Haase – Marius Copil 6-4 6-7 7-5.

Pick: over 23 games
Odds: 1.78 @ 18Bet
Stake: 8
Possible profit: 6.24
Event date: 7 February
