Russia – Wales

Gareth Bale Wales Euro 2016

Russia needs a win in order to have any hopes of progressing from the Euro 2016 Group B and their chances to qualify would actually be extremely high with 3 points today. Wales is in the same situation if they achieve a draw, but the Brits can 100% book qualification with a victory, which could also see them win the group (or, in the worst case finish second).

Russia started Euro 2016 with a 1-1 draw against England, but they really did not deserve anything close to that. England had plenty of clear cut chances, took the lead, while Russia equalized with a fluke goal in injury time. They went on to be outplayed by Slovakia, losing 2-1 but never really having a chance for at least a draw. Russia has been hit by injuries to important players before the tournament, but also during it.

Wales claimed a great 2-1 win over Slovakia in the first round and was very close to get a point England as well. They led 1-0 at half time but went on to lose via an injury time goal by Sturridge. The Welsh side showed some good football in Euro 2016 and Gareth Bale (2 goals) seems to be at his absolute best, which makes this team that much more dangerous. With an impact player like Bale, scoring each game, this side could do some damage here in France.

Team news & lineups:

Denisov, Dzagoev, Cheryshev, Dzagoev, Kuzmin or Zhirkov are out of Russia`s team for various reasons, while a few other guys are nursing light knocks as well. Ledley is questionable for Wales, but he should be fit to take part in the starting lineup.

Russia: Akinfeev – Smolnikov, Ignashevich, Berezutski, Schennikov – Glushakov, Mamaev – Kokorin, Shatov, Smolov – Dzyuba

Wales: Hennessey – Chester, Williams, Davies – Gunter, Ramsey, Allen, Ledley, Taylor – Bale – Robson-Kanu

I rated Russia as the worst team in this group in my Euro 2016 Group B preview and I don`t think anything has changed during the tournament – on the contrary! The Russians are decimated by injuries to key players and their defense is looking really bad. They need to win this game, so Wales will have spaces to exploit and the Brits are at their absolute best when that is the case.

A poor defense which might be more vulnerable than usual due to Russia`s need for a win, matched up against a brilliant counterattacking team that owns a devastating Gareth Bale, this looks like a perfect matchup for Wales. I don`t see the Brits losing here, but I`m not too confident they will win either. Wales will look for the draw which will almost surely send them into the next stage, so that makes me believe the draw is the most likely result.

My tip here is a draw on the Wales win no bet market. The bet wins in case of a draw and we get our money back in case Wales win. Prediction: Russia – Wales 1-1.

Pick: Draw – Wales win no bet
Odds: 2.05 @ Bwin
Stake: 8
Possible profit: 8.40
