Simona Halep will take on Ashleigh Barty on Saturday in the WTA Montreal semifinals.
Halep is playing her first tournament since her third round exit at Wimbledon, which was preceded by her first Grand Slam win at Roland Garros. The Romanian has been extremely solid this week and seemingly raised her level with each round that passed. She started off with a very difficult 3 set win against Pavlyuchenkova, and followed with two dominant wins against Venus Williams and Caroline Garcia, losing a total of just 10 games in those two matches.
Ashleigh Barty is having a very good year, maintaining her spot in the WTA Top 20, and she also had a very good week here in Montreal. Barty played 4 matches and lost a single set, in the first round against Begu. In her next two rounds she claimed rather close two set victories over Van Uytvanck and Cornet (playing a tiebreak in each of the two matches) before destroying Kiki Bertens in the quarterfinals 6-3 6-1. Nevertheless, it must be said that Bertens played very poor tennis.Bet on Halep v Barty and get your 100% (100 Eur) welcome bonus at Ohmbet now!
This will be the first H2H meeting between Halep and Barty. Both players are very well suited for hard courts, so the surface in Montreal won`t give any player an advantage over the opponent.
Halep has been on fire in her last two matches, playing some of her best tennis to make light work of dangerous opponents like Venus Williams or Caroline Garcia. She really seems to be in the zone and is playing like the World No.1 she is, which might have something to do with her win at Roland Garros a couple of months ago – that surely took a lot of pressure away from Halep’s shoulders.
If the Romanian continues to play at the same level it`s hard to see anybody beating her this week, and to be honest Barty might actually be the least dangerous opponent left on the draw.
Listen, Barty played very good tennis this week, but it`s not like she was at some kind of special level. Her first three matches were close against rather average opposition for this level. Her quarterfinal win over Bertens was impressive, but in all honesty it was a special match. The heavy wind made things difficult for both players and Bertens just couldn`t deal with the circumstances, making 31 unforced errors in just 16 games and less than 1 hour of action. That`s two unforced errors per game!
Halep is the better player and she`s playing better tennis this week, so picking her to win is a logical option here. She`s at a top level at the moment and it will take a top player in absolute top form to beat her, which is not Barty`s case right now. Of course, the possibility exists for Halep to simply have a bad day, as she has been known to collapse out of nowhere, but that is a risk which seems worth taking. Hopefully, her newfound confidence after her Roland Garros risk will minimize the risk of a sudden drop in level.
My tip is Halep to win. Prediction: Simona Halep – Ashleigh Barty 6-4 6-4.
