Stephens – Pavlyuchenkova

Stephens Pavlyuchenkova betting preview

Sloane Stephens will take on Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the fourth round on Sunday morning, a clash which will be the last of Day 7 at the Australian Open.

Stephens has navigated her draw pretty well so far, defeating Townsend, Babos and Martic without losing a set. While the American had a very easy time in the first two rounds, she had a very tough match in the third against Martic, edging that one 7-6 7-6 after more than two hours of play. It was a high level clash, with both players putting on a high level display of tennis.

Pavlyuchenkova had a similar road to the fourth round, claiming two easy wins (Puig, Sasnovich) and having one difficult match, in the second round against Bertens. Pavlyuchenkova won that meetings in three sets and went on to play a very solid match in the third round against Sasnovich, losing just 3 games – though it has to be said that Sasnovich was not very good.

Stephens leads the H2H 2-0 (both meetings on hard courts). She won the previous encounter just a few months ago in Beijing in a three setter.

Both players had very poor results this year prior to the Australian Open, but raised their level here in Melbourne.

Looking at Pavlyuchenkova, her 6-0 6-3 victory over Sasnovich in the previous round raises eyebrows, but fact is the win was not as impressive as it seems at first sight. Sasnovich really had a stinker that day, playing very poorly. She made 25 unforced errors in 15 games – that`s more unforced errors than Martic made in 26 games against Stephens!

Stephens played very well this week and even though she had a really tough win over Martic in the third round, that was a match against an in form opponent, as Martic really played well. Stephens came up big in the important moments, and that`s always a good indication of a player`s form and confidence.

If Stephens keeps this up and manages to improve just a bit, she could be in for big things in this tournament. Pavlyuchenkova should be a relatively accessible opponent for her.

The Russian is playing well, but she`s not in any kind of special form, and also doesn`t have the weapons to trouble Stephens. Pavlyuchenkova doesn`t really do many things better than Stephens does, and doesn`t have enough firepower to break down the American`s defense. As such, Stephens should be able to keep the ball in play, take control of the rallies when the opportunity presents itself, and eventually force errors from her opponent. The two previous H2H meetings both followed this scenario.

It might also be worth noting that Stephens is notoriously a good player at Grand Slams and a big match player, while Pavlyuchenkova has struggled a lot in the last couple of years on this stage (1st or 2nd round exits in her last 7 Grand Slams).

This seems like a pretty bad match up for Pavlyuchenkova. Unless she will play lights out tennis, and / or Stephens has a really bad day, this should be a rather straightforward win for the American. My tip will be Stephens to win. Prediction: Sloane Stephens – Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4 6-4.
