South Africa – France

South Africa France betting preview

South Africa hosts France at the Airline Park, Johannesburg, in the third consecutive June test between the two sides. South Africa won the first two matches comfortably, and is looking for a sweep in this 3 game series.

The Springboks were absolutely dreadful in 2016, as the quota system (they need to select a certain number of black players) and the poor coaching of Coetzee turned them into a laughing stock – and it all culminated with a defeat against Italy in the November tests. However, South Africa showed a totally different face in these June tests so far, railroading France in the first two meetings of the series, winning each time by 20+ points. The Springboks are looking quick, young and sharp, they are looking to prove themselves and will fancy a sweep of France in this 3rd game of the series.

France showed some good progress this year, putting together a good 6 Nations campaign, finishing 3rd behind England and Ireland. However, the French came to South Africa a few weeks ago with most of their players tired after a grueling Top 14 season, and some of them didn`t even make the trip. The French looked fatigued and slow in the first two games against South Africa and it`s a big questionmark if anything can be changed ahead of this 3rd game.

Team news & lineups:

South Africa is looking to ride the momentum and will select a similar side to the ones that destroyed France twice in the last few weeks. The French will make a few tweaks in their first XV, but they seem to be desperation changes, and many French fans feel this is the weakest lineup France will field in these 3 matches against SA.

South Africa: 15 Andries Coetzee, 14 Raymond Rhule, 13 Jesse Kriel, 12 Jan Serfontein, 11 Courtnall Skosan, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Francois Hougaard, 8 Warren Whiteley (c), 7 Jean-Luc du Preez, 6 Siya Kolisi, 5 Franco Mostert, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Ruan Dreyer, 2 Malcolm Marx, 1 Tendai Mtawarira

France: 15 Brice Dulin, 14 Nans Ducuing, 13 Damian Penaud, 12 Gael Fickou, 11 Virimi Vakatawa, 10 Jules Plisson, 9 Baptiste Serin, 8 Louis Picamoles, 7 Kevin Gourdon, 6 Yacouba Camara, 5 Romain Taofifenua, 4 Yoann Maestri, 3 Rabah Slimani, 2 Guilhem Guirado (c), 1 Jefferson Poirot

South Africa won the first two matches by almost identical scores, 37-14 and 37-15. I see another similar scoreline this time around.

France actually played reasonably well so far in the series, but didn`t have that killer instinct and fell physically in the first two games. They are even more prone to repeat the scenario this time around, as their fitness will only get worse. A poor performance seems due, and if that happens, France could be obliterated here.

The French are just too tired after a long club season and that is always a deciding factor in rugby. South Africa on the other hand is in the midst of the domestic club season, playing at home, so their players are in a much better spot.

France is not even at full strength, missing huge pieces like their top class kicker Lopez (his replacement Plisson is a liability at this level), while the South Africans are on a mission to redeem themselves after a dreadful 2016, and are looking for a sweep in this 3 game series.

As the meetings in the last couple of weeks showed, the 13,5 handicap is not too large to be covered by a dominant Springboks performance – and I`m not surprised odds are dropping on this point spread. Only a couple of mistakes by France, which they are making due to fatigue, can easily translate to 14 points for the Boks.

France should be even more tired this time around and they might end up losing even worse than in the first two matches of this series. My tip here is South Africa to win and cover the 13,5 point spread. Prediction: South Africa – France 38 – 12.
