Sweden – Belgium

Ibrahimovic retire Euro 2016 Sweden Belgium

Sweden and Belgium will square off in the last round of Euro 2016’s group C, with Sweden in need of a win to qualify, while Belgium will go trough from the second place with a win or a draw. Belgium could also qualify with a loss, but they will obviously look to finish second.

For all the talk about Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Sweden has been an absolute non factor on the offensive end in this tournament. They weren`t able to create anything up front and are the only team who has still not attempted a shot on goal in Euro 2016 – even if they did score via an own goal in the 1-1 draw with Ireland. Sweden is on the back of a 0-1 loss against Italy and just got the news that Zlatan Ibrahimovic will retire from the team after Euro 2016.

Belgium recovered well from the 0-2 defeat against Italy, putting on a show to defeat Ireland 3-0 in the second round. The Belgium side is obviously full of talent and while they may lack chemistry and aren`t particularly well coached, they should have enough to finish second in this group. First place is an impossibility, no matter what they do, while a loss would probably still be enough o qualify from the third place (as long as Ireland doesn`t defeat Italy).

Team news & lineups:

Lustig is doubtful for Sweden and Dembele is doubtful for Belgium. Both will probably miss from the starting lineup.

Sweden: Isaksson – Johansson, Lindelof, Granqvist, Olsson – Larsson, Kallstrom, Ekdal, Forsberg – Guidetti, Ibrahimovic

Belgium: Courtois – Meunier, Vermaelen, Alderweireld, Vertonghen – Nainggolan, Vitsel – Carrasco, De Bruyne, Hazard – Lukaku

A draw would be enough for Belgium to finish second and they can`t finish first no matter what they do, so there`s no reason to expect much from them today. Belgium will probably control the pace of the game patiently, try to keep a clean sheet and try to score if opportunities present themselves.

Sweden needs a win, but it might be naive to expect this team to play recklessly. Any win would do, so I can see Sweden trying to make sure they don`t fall behind, in order to give themselves a chance in the latter stages. If they score it will be total defense from then on and if they fall behind, I can still see them being patient until one point.

My tip is under 2,5 goals to be scored, I expect a slow game, with Sweden trying to hang on and stay in the match, while Belgium won`t be too interested in taking risks. It should be Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s last international match. Prediction: Sweden – Belgium 0-1.
