Switzerland – Poland

Switzerland Poland betting preview

Poland and Switzerland will square off in the first Euro 2016 Round 16 clash, with Poland rated as a slight favorite to qualify by the bookmakers.

Switzerland had an easy time qualifying from Group A, finishing second with 5 points. They had a shaky performance in a 1-0 win over a 10 men Albania to open their tournament, but played much better against Romania – even if they were held to a 1-1 draw, which was an unfair result. The Swiss went on to finish with a boring 0-0 draw against France, as both teams needed a draw in that match. Switzerland showed some great individual quality in the group stages, but also revelead (again) their inconsistency and poor finishing.

Lewandowski not being able to find the net in the first three matches was not a problem for Poland. The highest scoring team in the preliminaries, Poland played a more tactical and cautious brand of football in the Euro 2016 group stages, claiming 7 points despite having a goal difference of just 2-0. They controlled the matches against Northern Ireland and Ukraine in a pragmatic manner and were able to hold Germany to a 0-0 draw, which the Polish team pretty much deserved.

Team news & lineups:

Switzerland can field its best lineup in this clash, while Poland misses Kapustka. Szczesny is also not yet fully recovered and Fabianski will probably start in goal until the end of the tournament.

Switzerland: Sommer – Lichtsteiner, Schar, Djourou, Rodriguez – Behrami, Xhaka – Shaqiri, Dzemaili, Mehmedi – Embolo

Poland: Fabianski – Cionek, Glik, Pazdan, Jedrzejczyk – Zielinski, Krychowiak, Jodlowiec, Kapustka – Milik, Lewandowski

Neither team lost so far in this tournament despite meeting the likes of France or Germany. Both sides are similar in terms of quality (Switzerland has a bit more), but Poland is the more professional and pragmatic side. They play very well tactically and have arguably the best striker in the world in their ranks. Meanwhile, Switzerland is at the mercy of talented but inconsistent players like Shaqiri or Dzemaili, who often take decisions in the detriment of the team. Switzerland also lacks a striker who can finish off chances.

All in all, Poland is a deserving favorite in this match, but Switzerland can definitely hold its own. Any team who falls behind will have a tough time coming back, so I expect Switzerland and Poland to play this match very carefully.

I don`t think Poland being the slightly better team will be enough for them to win this match in 90 minutes. I expect a tight, classic KO round match with few chances and I think chances are we will see a draw in regular time. My tip is a draw on the Poland win no bet market, just in case the Poles do manage to find a way. Prediction: Switzerland – Poland 0-0 (0-1 extra time).
