Uruguay – Peru

Uruguay Peru Copa America tips

Uruguay and Peru will square off on Saturday in the Copa America quarterfinals, with the clash set to take place at Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador, Bahia.

Uruguay has been solid and consistent in the group stage. With a cohesive group and led by their two stars Suarez and Cavani, La Celeste won their group with victories over Ecuador (4-0) and Chile (1-0), plus a 2-2 draw with Japan. Aside from the Japan match, in which Uruguay indeed was not at its best, La Celeste played great football on both ends and proved themselves particularly secure at the back.

Peru qualified for the quarterfinals as one of the best third placed teams, as they finished behind Brazil and Venezuela in their group (with 4 points). It`s fair to say Peru has been a little bit underwhelming in this tournament. They started off with a 0-0 draw against Venezuela (a fair result), beat Bolivia 3-1 in unimpressive fashion and were demolished 0-5 by Brazil.

Team news & lineups:

Uruguay will miss Vecino and possibly Laxalt, while Peru has been dealt a blow by Farfan’s knee injury, which ruled him out for the rest of the tournament.

Uruguay: Muslera – Gonzalez, Gimenez, Godin, Caceres – Nandez, Torreira, Bentancur, Lodeiro – Suarez, Cavani

Peru: Gallese – Advincula, Zambrano, Abram, Trauco – Yotun, Taipa – Polo, Flores, Cueva – Guerrero

Uruguay really looks good in this tournament. They seem to be very cohesive and disciplined, and their central axe, the team`s spine, is as good as they come and provides balance. You have Gimenez – Godin at the back, Torreira – Bentancur in the middle, and Suarez – Cavani up front. That`s one of the best central axes in world football.

Meanwhile, Peru has shown to be too reliable on the old legs of Guerrero and Farfan, who were instrumental in the team`s only win against Bolivia. And now Farfan is out.

Peru really hasn`t shown much in this Copa America, they have been average in the first two games in which Venezuela and even Bolivia gave them huge problems, and they were dreadful in the last group game against Brazil. The Peruvians definitely seem to have lost a step compared to last year`s World Cup.

The way Uruguay has been defending you would expect Peru to have a tough time scoring (especially without Farfan), while Peru`s defense definitely didn`t look good enough in this tournament to stop Suarez and Cavani. My tip will be Uruguay to win. Prediction: Uruguay – Peru 2-0.
