Videoton – BATE

Hungarian champions Videoton Fehervar will take on BATE Borisov in the 3rd round of the Champions League qualifications.

Videoton really struggled in the previous round against Welsh side TNS. The Hungarians won the first leg 1-0 away, but were horrible in the reverse leg at home and needed extra time to get a 1-1 draw and progress to the 3rd qualifying round. Videoton seemed to have no clue on offense and they were frustrated by a really modest side. It`s true that TNS has a very good side for their standards, but standards in Welsh football are very low. Videoton confirmed its poor showing against TNS by losing both games in the Hungarian league + the Hungarian supercup (without scoring in any of the 3 matches), so things are not looking good right now for the hosts. They scored just one time in 5 matches this season and lost 4 of 5 matches in regular time.

BATE also had some problems against Irish side Dundalk in the previous round, winning 2-1 at home and drawing 0-0 away. However, these results don`t really do BATE justice, as they were clearly the better side and deserved to win both legs. At the same time, the boys from Dundalk are playing the football of their lives right now and are surely a much better side than TNS. BATE is currently in the middle of the Belarussian season and they have played brilliant so far, leading the league by 8 points and posting a 12-2-0 record.

BATE has all the arguments to get a positive result here. They have a strong team, stronger than last season. They are in good form, possess superior quality to Videoton and have much more experience, bidding to reach the Champions League group stages for the 6th time in the last 8 years. Also, maybe the most important fact is the poor form of Videoton, who is simply poor right now, especially on the offensive end.

My tip is BATE Borisov +0 asian handicap. They should at least get the draw, but chances are they will manage to edge this one. Under 2,5 goals could also be a solid choice, both teams will approach the game in a cautious manner and Videoton is very much challanged on the offensive end, they might well go scoreless.
