West Ham – Arsenal

Ozil Wenger West Ham Arsenal preview

Arsenal will attempt to bounce back after a couple of disappointing results when they face West Ham United at the London Olympic Stadium.

West Ham is on the back of a massive 1-0 home win against Chelsea, their first Premier League victory since September, and their first win under David Moyes. West Ham wasn`t impressive in the first few games since the Scotsman took over, but they have been on the up in the last couple of weeks – not only beating Chelsea, but also performing well in a 1-2 loss at Manchester City (with City winning via a 96th minute goal). Nevertheless, West Ham is still in a precarious position, sitting on the 18th place in the Premier League.

Arsenal has dropped out of the Top 4 after claiming just 1 point in the last two rounds, and they definitely need a victory here. The Gunners were hugely unlucky to lose 1-3 against Manchester United two rounds ago, as they played brilliant football in that game and had tons of chances. But on the other hand they were very poor last weekend against Southampton, and maybe didn`t even deserve the 1-1 draw on Sunday.

Team news & lineups:

West Ham will miss Collins, Fonte, Byram and possibly Kouyate, but that is a much shorter injury list than a few weeks ago. Arsenal will be without Ramsey and Cazorla, while Mustafi and Walcott are doubtful. One of Lacazette or Sanchez could be relegated to the bench, either for rest considerations, or to make way for Giroud – but that is just speculation.

West Ham United: Adrian – Zabaleta, Ried, Ogbonna, Cresswell – Obiang, Noble – Antonio, Lanzini, Arnautovic – Chicharito

Arsenal: Cech – Holding, Koscielny, Monreal – Bellerin, Xhaka, Wilshere, Kolasinac – Ozil, Welbeck – Lacazette

West Ham seems like a scarier team to play against after their recent two performances, and considering they got some players back from injury … particularly Reid being a big plus in defense.

However, all these do not make West Ham world beaters. The hosts remain clear candidates for relegation, and the current ability of David Moyes as manager remains questionable.

Furthermore, you would expect a team like West Ham to suffer a letdown after two grueling matches against top opposition, games in which they fought their hearts out. It will be their third match in 10 days against a Top 5 club, so that could definitely end up affecting West Ham.

The Hammers do have 1 extra day of rest compared to Arsenal, which could be important in a midweek game, but chances are the negative effect of their recent schedule will count more than that extra rest day.

Arsenal has played well overall lately, and it`s reasonable to expect a better performance from them than the one they put on Sunday in Southampton. The Gunners haven`t played two bad matches in a row too many times this season.

Arsenal only has a 2-2-4 record away from home in the Premier League this season, but this won`t be much of a travel for them – playing in London at the Olympic Stadium, an arena which is only a temporary home for West Ham. Arsenal destroyed the Hammers 5-1 here last season, and Wenger`s boys have 5 wins and 1 draw in the last six away games against West Ham (and 11 wins in the last 13 meetings overall).

While there are arguments to be made in favor of West Ham, as explained in the analysis, I reckon this looks like the kind of game in which Arsenal usually claims the three points. They always do well against the Hammers and they are in need of a bounce back performance. Maybe most importantly, it`s just hard to see West Ham challenging a top side for the third time in 10 days.

All in all, my tip here will be an away win. Prediction: West Ham United – Arsenal 1-2.
