Wolves – Chelsea

Cesc Fabregas Chelsea

Wolverhampton hosts Chelsea at Molineux Stadium, with both teams eyeing a spot in the FA Cup quarterfinals.

This tie doesn`t come at a good time for Wolverhampton, as the hosts are in very poor form, losing 4 of the last 5 matches in the Championship – including the last three. Wolves have dropped to the 18th place in the standings and relegation is starting to become an issue, even though they should eventually avoid the drop.

Chelsea will be happy that this is the only match they have to play in a two week timespan, as they are not involved in European football. As such, Antonio Conte is expected to field a few key players in his lineup in an attempt to avoid a potential replay. Chelsea is on the back of a 1-1 road draw at Burnley, but they are still comfortably leading the Premier league.

Team news & lineups:

Wolves will miss Graham, Williamson and Zyro, while Mason and Price are questionable. The hosts might choose to rotate the squad a little bit, giving a chance to the players that beat Liverpool in the previous round. Chelsea will miss David Luiz, but will also make other changes to the lineup.

Wolverhampton: Ikeme – Coady, Stearman, Hause, Doherty – Saiss, Saville – Costa, Edward, Weimann – Dicko

Chelsea: Begovic – Azpilicueta, Terry, Zouma – Ake, Fabregas, Chalobah, Loftus-Cheek – Pedro, Batshuayi, Willian

Chelsea’s form and confidence, along with the fact that Wolverhampron is in dreadful form, are both signs that an upset is unlikely. A lower quality team like Wolves would need good form and good morale to trouble Chelsea – that is when surprises usually happen in the Cup and that is not the case ahead of this clash.

Wolverhampton’s main ‘quality’ at the moment seems to be the fact that they beat Liverpool at Anfield in the previous round, but that doesn`t mean much as far as the Chelsea game is concerned – and Wolves were in better form back then anyway.

Chelsea`s projected lineup should be more than strong enough to do the job here. Considering the effective and ruthless offense of the Blues, I reckon they will win this by more than one – especially as they had a week off before this clash and will have a week off after it.

My tip is Chelsea to cover the 1 goal asian handicap, I am very satisfied with the odds even if some people will consider ~1.50 to be a low price. Prediction: Wolverhampton – Chelsea 0-2.
