It will be interesting to see how new manager Julian Lopetegui does at the helm especially with talisman Ronaldo gone and the future of World cup best player Luka Modric still very much unresolved. hey still possess a very good squad though and we should see more of Gareth Bale after being in the shadow of Ronaldo for pretty much all his stay in the capital and will be looking for a much improved role in the team. Bale, Benzema, Asencio, Kroos, Casemiro, Isco, Ramos, Marcelo, Carvajal are all in the squad and should feature from the start but it could be too early for new signing Courtois while Modric has not got much pre season games under his belt and could start on the bench.
Atletico Madrid have not had a good pre season and will have to be at their best to match Madrid in this game. The possible absence of World cup winning attacker Griezmann should make things a little harder for them also. They brought in Thomas Lemar and Kalinic during the window but I do not see how they will improve the team drastically despite being good players. Simeone is one those managers who prefers a solid cohesive unit to an all attacking team and Lemar would have much defensive job than attacking most of the time.
I fancy MAdrid for the win today considering the pre season they have had. They lost the first game to Man United by 2-1 despite controlling majority of that game but bounced back to beat Juventus, Roma and Milan in confident fashion and I tip Lopetegui to get the season up and running with a win against their city rivals, but not without conceding at least once themselves. A 3-1 result looks very probable.
