I have to say Cilic was nowhere to be found after his US Open success. Poor form and injuries derailed him and he seems to be on the path of another 1 time US Open winner, Juan Martin Del Potro. Cilic played a single match before Monte Carlo, a clear loss with Juan Monaco. He beat Florian Mayer this week in 3 sets, another player that did not play tennis for a long time. If Cilic needed 3 sets to beat Mayer, I don't know what he will do with Tsonga.
Since we're talking about injuries, Tsonga was in the same situation: played only 1 tournament before Monte Carlo. But unlike Cilic, Tsonga won 3 of the 4 matches played so far.
You can see with the naked eye that Tsonga is in superior shape and his return from injury has been successful. Cilic is having struggles, making a comedy of UE's and not able to play his game. Tsonga will have a lot of confidence after beating a dangerous player like Goffin and will do the same with Cilic who is a shell of his former self at the current time.
The energy that Tsonga gets from the home crowd is not to be underestimated either.
