Chicago - San Jose

On paper (and according to the bookies) it should be low-scoring affair. But I think its a wrong feeling. Probably not offensive blockbuster, but both should score (I think).

Well. I like how Chicago is performing up front recently. Veljko Paunovic stuck with 4-3-3 formation in last 2 league home matches and Chicago earned 4 points and combined 37 shots in those 2 games. I think they will continue to run forward as actually have nothing to lose. In last 3 matches (1 Cup and 2 in league) they netted 6 goals (scored in every match, despite 2 being played away from home against Conference leaders).
Im impressed with a 22-year old Senegalese holding midfielder Khaly Thiam who was acquired on loan in early May. I saw him for the first time in Colorado and he has decent passing ability and was the only player able to consistently connect forward passes out of midfield on that game (Im serious, nobody else could unlock Michael Azira and Sam Cronin).
And with the Fires speed-based attack and Thiams support goals shouldnt be a problem here.
On the other hand the Fire conceded 7 goals in last 3, and defensive mistakes cost them a lot this season. Cant see them improving in this area against extremely dangerous San Jose.

About San Jose. Tthe Quakes failed to find the net in 3 of last 4. Not good. But they were missing Chris Wondolowski who is everything in this team. Not this season. Since 2010. Wondolowski has 116 career MLS goals in 241 league appearances and seven goals from twelve appearances this season. With hip up front the Quakes are different type of animal. In fact San Jose have registered double digit shot counts in all of their last four matches, out-possessed their opponents in those matches, and completed more successful blocks and interceptions as well. They just were lacking final touch forward (Wondo). Now he is back so goals shouldnt be a problem here (on paper).
Tthe Quakes have solid defense.. but wait. They failed to keep a clean sheet in last 4 and conceded in all away matches this season. With CB Victor Bernardez (16/0 the only field player on the Earthquakes to play every minute of every game this season ) and fellow defenders Andres Imperiale (6/0), Clarence Goodson (2/0) trend should be continued.
They will have to make do with Marvell Wynne and Fatai Alashe in the heart of the defensive line at Chicago.

"Marvell is not really a center back, he's our fourth option, Fatai's our fifth option, and now they're our one and two. It show you the injury problem we have at the center back position." said coach Kinnear.

I would back Chicago to win here but San Jose (despite all problems) are comeback kings this season. Chad Barretts 90th minute equalizer against LA along with Barretts 85th and Shea Salnas 94th minute goals against Orlando

So lets stick with goals here.
