Malmo – Helsingborg

Markus Rosenberg Malmo FFReigning champions and current league leaders Malmo FF will take on arch rivals Helsingborg in a derby clash counting not only for Allsvenskan standings, but for pride as well.

Malmo is dominating Swedish football right now and they did pretty well with the money gained in Champions League last season – bringing in some quality players like top goalscorer Berget or Sana and keeping a good atmosphere in the locker room with a nice salary distribution. Overall a healthy organization and clearly the best club in Allsvenskan. Malmo is already first in the standings with 4 wins and 2 draws in the first 6 matches. They drew in the opening round against AIK, with AIK parking the buss, beat the likes Goteborg and recorded a surprising 3-3 draw at Falkenberg 2 rounds ago. Malmo scored 9 goals in the last three outings.

Helsingborg is currently 5th in the standings with 3 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss in the first 6 rounds. They won 3 out of the previous 4 matches, but these stats are really misleading – the visitors met mostly sides that will fight for relegation and the only 2 solid opponents they met were Kalmar (0-0) and Goteborg (1-3). Helsingborgs is expected to finish somewhere midtable in this campaign, but is way off the quality of Malmo, Elfsborg, AIK or Goteborg.

Team news: There are no new missing players for either side and we should see them line up similar to their matches in the last round, where both teams recorded good, solid wins.

The rivalry factor has diluted a little bit in the last years due to Malmo’s dominance in the league, while Helsingborg has went a bit downill. However, we are sure to see the visitors leave their hearts out on the pitch, but I doubt it will be enough. Helsingborg struggled this season both times they met good opposition and Malmo will be by far their toughest test yet. The hosts are in good shape and they have been scoring for fun lately, having amazing offensive players like Berget (ex Celtic, Cardiff), Rosenberg (ex WBA, Werder), Mehmeti (ex Palermo) or Sana (ex Ajax) – I expect them to keep up the scoring record against Helsingborg, but to be more focused on defense with the derby factor kicking in.

My tip is Malmo to win and cover a 1,25 goal asian handicap, they are by far the better team here, play at home and their offense should ensure not only the win, but the covering of the handicap as well. Prediction: Malmo – Helsingborg 3-0.

Pick: Malmo (-1,25 Asian Handicap)
