Romania – Greece

Romania Greece betting preview Euro

Romania and Greece square off in the Euro 2016 qualifying Group F. The Romanians are second, one point behind Northern Ireland and in a very good position to qualify. Greece on the other hand is in the middle of a catastrophical campaign, gaining just 2 points in the first 7 rounds and sitting on the last place – obviously not even a miracle would be enough for them to reach Euro. The two teams met in the 2014 World Cup qualifying playoffs, with Greece winning 4-2 aggregate (3-1, 1-1) and then earlier in this group, 1-0 for Romania in Piraeus.

Romania is coming after a 0-0 draw in Hungary, a poor match in which Romania played a bit better, but in the end both teams were looking for the draw and got it. The result has kept Romania undefeated with 4 wins and 3 draws, but today`s hosts lost the first place to Northern Ireland. Nevertheless, manager Iordanescu was not upset about this, stating that the objective is to qualify and he will be very happy if Romania finishes second.

It has been truly unbelievable what happened to Greece in this campaign – just two points, losing twice to the Faroe Islands and yet another horrible defeat at home to Finland on Friday – showing that appointing Kostas Tsnanas and manager was not enough to change the fortunes in the team. With qualification hopes over, the Greeks tried to give some younger players a chance lately, but they still have a very good squad, the best in the Group if we are talking about individual quality.

Team news & lineups:

Romania will miss Chipciu and probably Hoban, while Budescu is slightly questionable. Greece will not have Ninis and Torosidis.

România: Tătăruşanu – Papp, Chiricheş, D. Grigore, Raţ – Pintilii, Prepelita – Ad. Popa, Budescu, Torje – Keserü

Grecia: Karneis – Vyntra, Papadopoulos, Sokratis, Holebas – Samaris, Kone, Tziolis – Aravidis, Mitroglou, Karelis

It`s hard to say when Greece will finally bounce back from this awful run and things are not looking good for them. Obviously one has to be very brave to back Greece right now, but I fully believe they can escape with a draw in Romania. Even if they play another poor match, they still have a very good defense and they are much better when they can sit back, not having to control the match – it is not a coincidence that their two latest good results, in Hungary and in Poland (friendly), came exactly in what where on paper the toughest matches Greece faced.

Most of all, I don`t see Romania taking any risks in this one, their aim is clearly to be pragmatic and qualify. The manager will surely be content with a tied result and I would not be surprised if they actually choose to play for a draw. The offensive force in the team is currently non existent, like we could see in the Hungary match, so against a good defense and without needing to win, it will be a difficult task for Romania to get the three points. All in all, my tip is Greece +0,75 asian handicap. Prediction: Romania – Greece 0-0.

Pick: Greece (+0,75 Asian Handicap)

  1. “Against a good defense” ??ho’s defense…greece? These team conceded 3 goals from feroe.are you high when you write this picks. Damn if i understand your way of picking games!

    • Greece conceded just over 1 goal per game in a historically bad campaign so far.

Greece is traditionally a defensive side, well organized, their main aim is to stay safe at the back.

Their have three top class center backs, good wing backs as well, good keeper individual quality is surely great in defense.

Greece has 2 clean sheets in the last 4 matches (Hungary, Poland).

Your point about Faroe was already explained in the pick, with them being vulnerable when they have to attack.

I think this qualifies for a good defense. I didn`t say great or world class. Now I`m sure you can contest some of my arguments, but I think you are being a little bit too aggressive – I did not say anything THAT wrong, maybe just debatable. I don`t think one needs to be “high”, drunk or an idiot to say that Greece has a good defense.

Later edit: Indeed I said “very good defense”, which probably was a bit of an overstatement.

  2. it worked simple and precise lol

    • Yep, it went pretty much as expected (with a bit of luck Romania could have maybe edged it 1-0), but that was not the point – good picks can be lost, bad picks can be won – I just did not think that Costi was right in attacking me for what was a debatable statement, not something wrong.

  3. How is it that in september you have minus 2.90 instead the reality is you are minus 18.90. Don t tell me.it was a mistake.cheers

    • Yes it was a mistake, but it is your mistake. The profit is -2.10, I triple checked.

Honestly I appreciate that you took time to calculate, it should show that I am honest, but unfortunately you made some errors somewhere. Please check again and if you still don`t get -2.10, I`ll be happy to create a file with all the picks’ & the associated profit/loss and prove it.

Next time please be sure when you say things like these, because you are hurting our image, people might read and think we are doing silly stuff. You know how easily reputation can be destroyed just because of some words thrown out there by somebody? Hell man, I am one of the few honest betting tips webmasters out there and you are accusing me of theft. But it`s true that it is my fault for not providing a more transparent interface for editors’ tips. I am working on that.
