Wrexham – Guiseley

Wrexham stadium fans conference

Welsh side Wrexham takes on Guiseley in the Vanarama English National League, with the hosts in big need of a win after recent results have not exactly gone their way.

After a 10th place finish last year, Wrexham was one of the favorites to gain promotion this season and they started well – but a run of 5 consecutive matches without a win has dropped Wrexham to the 10th place after 16 rounds. The hosts have just two points in these last 5 matches and are desperate for three points today. On the bright side, Wrexham hasn`t played as bad as recent results suggest. All of the last 5 matches have been close and against good teams. In the previous two outings Wrexham drew 2-2 with 5th placed Tranmere and lost 1-2 at 3rd place Dover on Saturday – a match from which Wrexham arguably deserved more.

National League newcomers Guiseley, who finished 5th in Conference North last season, are sitting on an honorable 18th place after 16 matches – but they are still one of the top favorites for relegation. The visitors have been in very poor form recently, losing the last three matches with a 0-7 goal difference and there are questions if they are starting to show their lack of quality – as Guiseley is surely one of the worst sides in the league quality-wise.

The home team seems to have a positive attitude ahead of this clash, with the players declaring themselves confident. Defender Ross White stated that he expects the team to bounce back and show character, but without putting unnecessary pressure on the match as being a “must win encounter”.

Despite Wrexham’s recent results, I am confident they will secure a win here. The team has not played so bad and seemed to improve in the last two matches. With the goalscoring potential and numbers of the home team, it`s safe to presume they should be able to cover the handicap as well against a team that is both leaking goals and failing to find the net at the moment. Guiseley is in even worse form than Wrexham, they are much worse quality-wise and I don’t see them taking points from this difficult road game in Wales.

My tip is Wrexham to win with a 1 goal asian handicap. Even with the recent struggles, the Red Dragons are still one of the Top 5 strongest home team in the Conference with a 5-2-1 statline and should be able to improve on that easily against the Yorkshire boys of Guiseley. Odds are dropping on the bet. Prediction: Wrexham – Guiseley 3-0.
