Spurs – Bournemouth

Tottenham Hotspur will look to maintain their status of main title rivals for Leicester when they play host to AFC Bournemouth at White Hart Lane, in a match counting for the 31st round of the Premier League.

After Leicester’s win on Saturday, Tottenham is now 8 points behind the Foxes. As such, the hosts will be under pressure to claim victory today and reduce the gap. Tottenham has been in rather shaky form recently, winning just one of the last five matches in all competitions – and that was against Aston Villa. The hosts are on the back of a 1-2 home loss to Borusia Dortmund, which capped an ugly aggregate loss of 1-5 for the Spurs in the Europa League.

Bournemouth is coming after a 3-2 home win over Swansea – their 3rd victory in a row. The visitors are playing some good football right now and have been very effective on the offensive end, scoring 8 goals in this run of 3 wins. Bournemouth is currently 13th in the standings and doesn`t have much left to fight for, as relegion and / or European qualification are both out of the question.

Team news & lineups:

N’Jie, Bentaleb, Vertonghen and Davies won`t be in Tottenham’s lineup, while Dier is a small doubt. Bournemouth will have to do without Wilson, Stanislas, Mings and possibly Arter.

Tottenham: Lloris – Walker, Alderweireld, Wimmer, Rose – Dier, Dembele – Lamela, Eriksen, Alli – Kane

Bournemouth: Boruc – Smith, Francis, Cook, Daniels – Surman – Ritchie, Gosling, Gradel, King – Afobe

Spurs have been surprisingly leaky at the back lately, conceding at least a goal in 5 of the last 6 matches in all competitions. This has obviously been the main cause for the recent lack of results. Tottenham has by far the best defense in the league with only 24 goals allowed in 30 games, but they are not scoring much themselves. This means that when Tottenham allows goals, they usually don`t have enough up front to make up for it.

It`s a make or break game for Spurs, who need a win to maintain a realistic chance for the title. ANything else than 3 points and Tottenham will need a small miracle to lift the Premier League trophy. With this in mind, I expect Pochettino to approach this match very carefully, reverting to his successful philosophy of defending well, patiently building attacks over the 90 minutes. Spurs surely worked a lot in training on the defensive end after the recent performances and I expect them to be better today.

Bournemouth is playing nice attacking football lately, but Tottenham will impose the tempo to them and I expect their main objective to be keeping a clean sheet, because clearly they have trouble winning when they don’t. Expect a close game, played mostly between Bournemouth’s 20 and 50 meter lines. All in all, my tip is under 2,75 goals to be scored and I reckon the odds are excellent on this bet. Prediction: Tottenham – Bournemouth 1-0.
