Italy is in an interesting moment. An end of a cycle, a bad cycle for Conte, who achieved mediocre results with this Italy team. It’s true that the players he has are of dubious quality. It is, however, a series of coincidences. Juventus faced Bayern Munchen very early in the the Champions League, Roma faced Real Madrid and Napoli and Fiorentina also played good teams in EL (Villarreal and Spurs) and also made rotations in their lineups… So it’s not so hard to explain, and it does not mean Italian football is dead and buried.

In the last 8 friendlies that Italy played against top teams, spanning back to 2013, 6 out of 8 were both to score. The only exceptions were a 2-0 home win over Holland (when Holland was 2-0 down and with 1 man less after 10 minutes, unusual for a friendly) and a 1-0 away loss to today’s opponents, Spain … So, one more time, in 6 out of 8 games both teams scored goals.
