Garcia-Lopez – Pella

Garcia-Lopez Nastase Tiriac trophy

Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Guido Pella will square off in one of the most interesting and most evenly matched quarterfinals at the Nastase Tiriac Trophy, played on red clay in Bucharest.

Garcia Lopez is the defending champion, winning in Bucharest last year and so far he respected his status. The Spaniard had a bye in the first round and defeated a Kyle Edmund in the second round, a solid 6-3 6-3 win against a good player. Garcia-Lopez is not having his best year so far on tour but he is not playing too bad either. So far on clay he defeated Almagro and Bellucci, losing to Vesely and Federer – playing a decent match against Roger last week in Monte Carlo.

Pella is having a breakout year, posting some impressive wins and results before entering a short slump lately, losing 0-6 6-7 to Del Potro in the Miami first round and being upset by Herbert in the Monte Carlo first round. However, Pella quickly got back on track, claiming two wins in Bucharest, 2-0 against Ungur and 2-1 against Gimeno Traver. His win against Gimeno in the second round was a very solid result, as his opponent loves the clay in Bucharest and entered the match in very good form.

Pella leads the Head 2 Head 1-0, winning the only meeting in 2014, on clay. Both players like the red dirt, so the surface will not favor one over the other.

This should be a tight, classic clay court match, as very little seems to be separating these two players right now. Garcia-Lopez is the defending champion and had a very solid win in his only match here, but Pella also played well and has a better season than the Spaniard. Both looked sharp this week and I can easily see this one finishing in 3 sets.

I definitely think that the odds on Pella are too high, I`m not even sure that Garcia-Lopez is the real favorite in this match. Prior to the tournament Pella was my favorite to win it all and so far he did not give me any reason to change my opinion. As such, the question for me is which of the following is a better bet: over 22 games or Pella to win?

I will choose Pella to win, because my analysis revolves around the fact that he has better chances than the bookies suggest. The last thing I want to do is bet on the over, thinking Pella has all the weapons to go toe to toe with Garcia-Lopez and then end up losing the bet because of a clear Pella win – which is not out of the question. My tip will be Pella to win. Prediction: Guillermo Garcia-Lopez – Guido Pella 4-6 6-3 5-7.
