Stuttgart – Dortmund

Stuttgart Dortmund betting preview

VFB Stuttgart will take on Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga 31st round, a match that counts more for the hosts – even if Dortmund is still in with a chance to win the title.

Stuttgart’s poor form of late saw them drop right back into the danger zone. The hosts are now on the 15th place, 2 points above the playout position, but they do have a game in hand over the owners of that spot, Werder Bremen. Stuttgart failed to win any of the last 5 matches, claiming just two points. The hosts lost their previous two matches against Bayern (1-3) and Augsburg (0-1).

Dortmund bounced back in superb fashion after that heartbreaking and maybe undeserved loss against Liverpool in the Europa League. Borussia recovered instantly with a 3-0 win over Hamburg in the Bundesliga and continued the good form with a 3-0 trashing of Hertha, in Berlin, in the DFB Pokal semifinals. The Cup is now Dortmund’s only realistic chance for a trophy, but they still have a very long shot for the title, trailing Bayern by 7 points with 4 rounds to go.

Team news & lineups:

Ginczek, Grosskreutz, Baumgartl and Die are out for Stuttgart, while Dortmund won`t have Aubameyang, Subotic and probably Gundogan in the lineup, but coach Tuchel might decide to also rest a couple of guys after the Cup semifinal midweek.

VFB Stuttgart: Tyton – Klein, Niedermeier, Barba, Insua – Schwaab – Rupp, Gentner, Didavi, Kostic – Werner

Dortmund: BΓΌrki – Durm, Ginter, Bender, Passlack – Sahin, Leitner – Castro, Mkhitaryan, Pulisic – Ramos

It seems very probable that Stuttgart’s weak defense will not work very well against Dortmund’s excellent offense, which looked fantastic midweek even with Aubameyang unavailable. This matchup might be one of the main reasons for which in the last six Head 2 Head meetings with Borussia, Stuttgart lost 5 times and barely got one draw – including suffering a couple of trashings along the way.

There`s not much to suggest that Stuttgart could pull off an upset here. They are in poor form, they are obviously the weaker team and the matchup does not seem too good for them either. Motivation is the only thing working in their favor, but motivation is not always enough. Additionally, Dortmund showed great character in the last week and has no reason to play it cool in these last few rounds. They are out of Europe and can only try and play their chances for the title until they are gone, while also getting confidence prior to the DFB Pokal final.

Even if Tuchel decides to send a couple of substitutes in the starting lineup, the visitors should have more than enough to get the three points here against this modest Stuttgart outfit. My tip is Dortmund to win. Prediction: VFB Stuttgart – Borussia Dortmund 1-2.
