Celta Vigo – Granada

Celta Vigo Granada betting preview

Monday night football in La Liga, with Celta Vigo and Granada closing up the 35th round in Spain. Both teams want the points, though Granada is in more desperate need of them.

Celta Vigo has already qualified to play Europa League football next year due to Sevilla being in the Copa Del Rey final, but the hosts are still nursing tiny hopes for a Champions League spot. Celta will climb up on the 5th place and will close the gap behind Villarreal (4th place) to just 4 points if they win here. Unfortunately for Celta, their current form can`t give them much confidence of pulling off the impossible. Sure, the hosts are undefeated in 6 matches, but in the last 4 rounds they have 1 win and 3 draws despite only playing teams ranked 13th and lower. Celta is on the back of a 1-1 draw at Espanyol.

Granada is currently on the 17th place in Primera Division, just one point above 18th placed Gijon and they absolutely must get some points here considering the fact that their schedule is impossible until the end of the season: red hot Las Palmas, FC Sevilla and Barcelona. Granada is in pretty good shape right now, only losing to Atletico Madrid in the last 6 matches and coming after an emphatic 5-1 home win against Levante.

Team news & lineups:

Beauvue and Fontas will not be in Celta’s lineup, while Wass and Mallo are questionable. Granada must deal with the suspensions of Costa and Perez, alongside the injured due of Success and Foulquier. Marquez and Lopes are doubtful.

Celta Vigo: Alvarez – Jonny, Cabral, Gomez, Planas – Wass, Hernandez, Diaz – Orellana, Aspas, Nolito

Granada: Fernandez – Lopes, Babin, Lomban, Biraghi – Rochina, Doucoure, Krhin, Cuenca – Penaranda, El-Arabi

Celta Vigo will certainly play their best until all hope for Champions League is gone, but realistically speaking Granada is the team that really needs the points and they are borderline desperate at the moment. It will not be an easy game for the hosts.

Celta has been very shy with goals lately, scoring only one goal in each of the last 4 matches, despite meeting opponents that were fighting for relegation. On the other hand their defense is working very well. If we take out a 1-7 loss to Real Madrid three weeks ago, we can see that Celta allowed just 3 goals in the last 8 matches – that is an impressive statistic to own.

Even if Granada’s defense is one of the worst in the league, they have been decent at the back lately and considering their level of desperation, I reckon they won`t give a shaky Celta too many opportunities. As for Granada’s chances to score, they don`t seem that high, especially after almost every shot went in for them last round against Levante.

Considering all the above, I expect a tight, rugged and fragmented Primera Division game here, with Granada fighting for their lives. My tip will be under 2,75 goals to be scored.

It`s also worth mentioning that the Head 2 Head statistics between the two teams support my bet. The last three meetings saw under 2,5 goals, as did 8 of the last 11 meetings. In 11 total direct matches since 2010, there have never been scored more than 3 goals in a game between Celta and Granada. Prediction: Celta Vigo – Granada 1-1.
