Zverev – Dimitrov

Zverev Dimitrov Internazionali BNL d'Italia

The last match of the day at Internazionali BNL d’Italia (Rome, red clay) will feature Alexander Zverev and Grigor Dimitrov in one of the most anticipated and balanced 1st round matches.

At just 19 years old, Zverev is continuing his climb in the ATP rankings, breaking Top 50 after some really solid performances this year. The young talent is obviously on a fast rise and is viewed by many as the future of tennis. Zverev is on the back of a semifinal showing in Munich, where he defeated Goffin before losing in three sets to Dominic Thiem. It was the second semifinal of the year for Zverev, who played great in 2016, defeating players like Simon (twice), Goffin or Dimitrov (today`s opponent).

Grigor hasn`t played great all season, though he wasn`t poor either, but he seems unable to take it to the next level and his performances are actually much worse than in recent years. Since the European clay court season started, Dimitrov seems to be at an even lower level than in the start of the year. He did play a semifinal at Istanbul (lost to Schwartzman), but the level of opposition he defeated was dirt poor. Last week Grigor was defeated by Carreno-Busta in the first round in Madrid.

The Head 2 Head is tied at 1-1, with Dimitrov winning in 2014 and Zverev winning this year – both meetings needing a deciding set. None of them was on clay, a surface that might suit Zverev better. Both guys are all rounders, but for Dimitrov clay might be the worst surface, while for Zverev it is the best.

Zverev deserves more credit than to be an underdog against Dimitrov and it’s no surprise that the odds are moving slightly in his favor. The German has played better tennis than Grigor for most of this season and he`s clearly playing better on clay. His short term form is superior. Meanwhile, Dimitrov just doesn`t seem able to find his groove in 2016, especially on clay.

At 19 years old Zverev will always present an extra risk for betting and he did suffer a couple of surprising losses this season, but all things considered he is definitely the favorite here, especially with the clay being rather slow.

I reckon the odds for Alexander Zverev to win represent a pretty solid value bet. I`m giving him roughly 55% – 60% chances to win this, so as a natural consequence my tip will be a Zverev win. I won`t invest more than medium-high stakes, mainly due to Zverev’s young age. Prediction: Alexander Zverev – Grigor Dimitrov 7-6 6-4.
