Gojowczyk – Copil

Peter Gojowczyk Marius Copil betting preview

Peter Gojowczyk and Marius Copil will square off Monday in the first round at Wimbledon, and both players will feel they have an honest shot to advance into the next stage.

Gojowczyk had a mixed season so far on grass, posting a 6-3 win loss record, but with most of the wins coming in qualifications. Three of them were right here at SW19, with Gojowczyk playing solid tennis to defeat Basic, Milojevic and Lacko without losing a set. Prior to Wimbledon, Gojowczyk reached the 2nd round at Stuttgart (def. Basilashvili, lost to Paire), but also suffered disappointing first round exits at challenger levels in Surbiton (Sugita) and Ilkley (Donskoy).

Marius Copil is having the best season of his career so far, finally finding the consistency needed to perform at a good level every week, something he always struggled with. The Big serving Romanian had a great year prior to the grass court season, finally breaking Top 100, and is coming to Wimbledon with high expectations – as grass is the surface best suited to his game. Copil had a solid preparation for Wimbledon, reaching the semifinals in the two events he participated – Surbiton challenger (lost to Sugita) and Nottingham-2 challenger (retired vs. Sela).

The H2H is tied at 1-1 (0-0 on grass). However, while Gojowczyk won 4 years ago, Copil’s win came just a few weeks ago, when he defeated Gojowczyk in a tight clash at the Roland Garros qualifications tournament (6-4 6-7 7-6).

The bookies opened with Marius Copil as a 1.65 favorite, but bets came in heavily on Gojowczyk and now Copil is rated as the underdog. I feel that the initial odds were closer to reality.

Copil suffered an injury in his last match a few weeks ago at Nottingham, hurting his shoulder, having not played since then. I suspect this is the main reason for which odds on him are going up (along with Gojowczyk’s solid win over Lacko in the last round of qualifications).

However, Copil stated for the Romanian media that his shoulder is 100% fine, and that he is fully recovered to play at his best level. He has trained at Wimbledon for the past 5 days with no problems. As a confirmation of this fact, he chose to take part in the doubles tournament as well.

Copil should be just fine physically and if that`s the case, he should be able to defeat Gojowczyk here. The German is having a decent year on grass and he played very well in qualifications, which will be an advantage. However, his wins came against lesser opposition, as he has a single win against a Top 100 player this year.

Copil is in the best moment of his career, his serve is working very well and that is always a very good barometer for what he can do. The Romanian is playing well, he loves the surface and when this mix happens for him, it usually takes either a Top player, or a player in red hot form to derail him. Gojowczyk is neither of that.

My tip is Copil to win and there`s clear value in the odds here. They continue to go up at the moment, so you might want to wait just a little bit more and see the movement, maybe you`ll get an even better price on the bet. Prediction: Peter Gojowczyk – Marius Copil 6-3 6-7 4-6 6-7.
