Cardiff – Man. United

Cardiff Manchester United what to betManchester United will overtake Southampton for the 4th place if they manage to win in Wales against Cardiff City today. You can get pretty good odds for the Devils to win, but the question is, of course, if they can do it. Like always, the stats and facts will tell us what to bet on this game.

United did not have the best of starts under David Moyes but clearly they needed a period of transition after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement. Slowly and steady United improved over the course of the season and they got a morale boosting win over leaders Arsenal last round. United is now undefeated in the last 9 games in the Premier League, League Cup and Champions League. They also won 5 of the last 6. Another highlight for United has been their play on the road, 3 wins in 5 games being a nice statline for a team that is considered to be underachieving. Jones, Carrick, Fletcher and Wellbeck are unavailable for the Devils. Rafael and Vidic will be game time decisions.

Manchester United lineup: De Gea – Smalling, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra – Cleverley, Giggs; Valencia, Rooney, Januzaj – Van Persie.

Cardiff’s current 15 place is a good performance for the freshly promoted club. With arguably the worst squad besides Crystal Palace, the home side will do very well to avoid relegation. However, the last performances from Cardiff were not as better as in the start of the season – they lost 5 of the last 8 games they played. They also haven-t been so dominant at home, where they were expected to gain the vast majority of their points. Two wins, one draw and two losses is mediocre at best. Also, with just 9 goals scored, Cardiff is third above only Sunderland and Palace in terms of the worst offense in the league. The welsh clearly have their problems, but at least they will be very happy to have a full and healthy squad available today, except star striker Cornelius who is finally fit but still not able to start.

Cardiff lineup: Marshall – Theophile-Catherine, Caulker, Turner, Taylor – Medel – Cowie, Gunnarsson, Whittingham, Bellamy – Odemwingie.

United is playing great lately and I can see them taking advantage of the quality advantage and off Cardiff’s poor form. Playing in Wales won’t be easy, but considering the home-away record of both teams, United can be confident of winning on the road. Van Persie and Rooney are in maximum form and for sure they will create a couple of chances for United, while Cardiff’s inability to score could prove decisive for their demise today. I will pick the visitors to win this game and leave very few chances for the hosts to score. I wouldn`t have given odds of over 1.60 for the current champions against the struggling Cardiff side and I view this as a solid and rather safe prediction. The strong point for the welsh is that they have a full squad (and United has some small squad problems), but I do not think that is enough for Cardiff to get something from this game. My prediction is Cardiff City – Manchester United 0-2.
