The last match of the day in US Open will see big hitters Sorana Cirstea (Romania) and Eugenie Bouchard (Canada) square off in what should be a highly entertaining second round match.
Sorana Cirstea has dropped to No. 80 in the World 3 weeks ago after failing to defend her Montreal/Toronto final, losing in the first match. The Romanian is a very talented player with some extraordinary shotmaking capabilities, very similar to Bouchard, but she is extremely inconsistent. Capable of beating any player on her day, Cirstea had a horible year and her inconsistency transformed in consistently poor performances. Nevertheless, she did defeat Ana Ivanovic in Davis Cup action and her coach, reputable Darren Cahill, said he expects here to improve in these last few months. Seems he knew what he was talking about, as Sorana produced one of her trademark performances in the first round, blowing out a decent player in Heather Watson 6-1 6-1.

Bouchard was very poor after Wimbledon, failing to make any impact on the US hard courts (lost 3 out of 4 matches, including a 0-6 6-2 0-6 defeat to S. Rodgers) and her US Open campaign seemed in real danger a few days ago. A solid 6-1 6-2 win over Govortsova pretty much ended the doubts, and she seems ready to perform at Grand Slams again – Bouchard has 2 semifinals and 1 final in Grand Slams this season and seems to always show up for the big events, no matter her form or pre – Grand Slam level of tennis.
The H2H is 0-0, it will be the first meeting between the two. The matchup and the H2H are irrelevant for the analysis, Cirstea and Bouchard are playing a similar brand of tennis and nobody has an edge in playing style.
I reckon Cirstea can make a real statement in this match. When she starts strong, like she did against Watson, she usually manages to mantain or increase her level of tennis in the next rounds. She has also responded very well over the years to a huge drop in rankings, getting a big result right after the drop happened. Bouchard is still not at 100% and she might be a little relaxed in the second round, so I reckon Cirstea has a very good chance to push her to the edge and I don’t exclude the possibility of a massive upset. Picking inconsistent Cirstea to cover a + game/set handicap is always a risk but in these circumstances it is worth it, and it`s no surprise the odds on her are dropping. My tip is Cirstea +1,5 set handicap, I think it`s better than the game handicap and at better odds. I doubt we will see something like 7-6 6-4 for Bouchard, there are better chances for Cirstea to take a set and then fall apart. Prediction: Sorana Cirstea – Eugenie Bouchard 7-6 3-6 2-6.
