Zverev – Coric

Zverev Coric preview and prediction

Borna Coric will attempt to reach his second consecutive semifinal at Masters level, but in his way will be the in form German ace Alexander Zverev.

Zverev`s performances this year have been a bit underwhelming considering the breakout year he had in 2017, as the German didn`t really do much prior to this week in Miami. Nevertheless, Zverev was solid in the last few days, defeating Medvedev, Ferrer and Kyrgios in order to reach the quarterfinals. While he had some problems in the first two rounds and lost a set in both of those matches, he increased his level in the next stage and put on a clinic to get past Kyrgios, 6-4 6-4. Zverev really played very well, even if Kyrgios complained about an injury and was inconsistent throughout the match.

Coric has been on fire this month, reaching the Indian Wells semifinals (almost beating Federer there) and backing up that performance with this quarterfinal showing here in Miami. Coric played good tennis this week to get past Mayer, Sock and Shapovalov, but his road to the QF’s was far from easy. The young Croatian lost a set in each of those three matches and not only that, but all were very long, close and could have really gone either way.

Coric leads the H2H 2-0 (both meetings on hard), but a deeper analysis of the H2H and matchup won`t reveal any advantage for him. Both matches were extremely tight, each player having his chance to win. Both players are very steady baseliners, with Zverev being the better overall player.

Coric is obviously playing well at the moment, but he wasn`t necessarily fantastic this week, needing to dig deep in order to grind out his wins. He might need to up the tempo a bit if he is to defeat a rejuvenated Zverev, and that might be a bit too much to ask right now.

Not only did Coric play 9 matches in the last 18 days (and this will be his 10th), but many of them were true marathons, absolute thrillers. All of Coric`s last six matches ended in three sets and lasted at least 130 minutes each. Here in Miami he played almost 9 hours of tennis in his three matches over the last 5 days!

Liste, Coric is just 21 years old and he`s a very fit player, but playing that amount of tennis will have an effect over anyone – especially as Coric isn`t exactly used to making these deep runs in top tournaments.

Zverev, who`s already a savvy and experienced competitor despite his young age, and owns a style which can break down opponents, will surely look to take advantage of the situation.

Considering the above and the fact that Zverev seems to be back in top form, playing very good and steady tennis in the last round, chances are Coric will not be able to pull off another miracle.

My tip is Zverev to win. Precition: Alexander Zverev – Borna Coric 4-6 7-5 6-1.
