Seppi – Monaco

Andreas Seppi Juan Monaco betting previewAndreas Seppi and Juan Monaco will square off in one of the most anticipated 2nd round matches at Roland Garros, and we should see a fine display from these top 20 caliber players.

Seppi is a good clay court player but he did not have the best of times this season on the red dirt, actually the whole 2014 was mediocre for him. Nevertheless, he did play decent tennis and defeated a number of top players, including Hewitt, F. Mayer, Querrey, Stepanek or Youzhny – but then again he also lost some 1st rounders and did not pass the QF in any tournament. On clay he reached the Monte Carlo 3rd round and recently the Dusseldorf semifinals, losing to Istomin. Seppi`s form has been shaky all season but he played such a good match in the Roland Garros 1st round, dispatching Santiago Giraldo in 3 sets despite the fact that the colombian is in the form of his life and was expecting to do some damage here at the French Open. Giraldo was not at his best, but still it was impressive tennis from Seppi.

Monaco has been on the decline in the last 7-8 months. The argentinian player got injured last year and missed the last 3 months of 2013, and his return to the circuit wasn’t too successful, as he dropped over 30 places in the ATP rankings. Last week was the first time in 11 months that Monaco managed to win consecutive matches, defeating Becker and Granollers before losing to Karlovic in Dusseldorf. His form in Dusseldorf was pretty good and he seemed to back that up in the Roland Garros 1st round, winning in 3 sets against Poulle, but the opponent was not exactly top class.

Monaco leads the H2H 2-1, winning the last 2 meetings (both in 2011), and on clay the score is tied at 1-1. No player has a matchup advantage, the two play a similar type of tennis, with the note that Seppi is less error-prone and Monaco has the only match winning shot between the two, his forehand. The surface also suits both guys in equal measure.

I`m having trouble understanding why Monaco is so fancied by the bookies and the general public here (his odds are dropping). Seppi might be in shaky form, but he is playing decent tennis and was actually very impressive in his first round against Giraldo. Monaco is in a slump for almost one year now and even though he increased his level lately, he is far from what he used to be and needs more time to find consistency. I can see Andreas Seppi keeping the ball in play and waiting for Monaco’s errors, while also attacking the argentinean’s backhand when he has the chance. The odds for Seppi are simply wrong and I am happy to tip the italian to win. Prediction: Seppi in 4 sets: Andreas Seppi – Juan Monaco 6-4 3-6 7-6 6-4. I`m looking for some solid return of investment on this bet and I think the odds on Seppi will start going down until match time.
