Seppi – Raonic

Andreas Seppi and Milos Raonic will square off in one of the most interesting second round matches to be played this year at Wimbledon.

Seppi doesn`t look like much of a grass court players at first sight, but despite not owning a big serve he`s actually a very solid player on this surface. He has a 60% winning record on the surface and won a title on the green. This year, he has been solid on grass, reaching the quarters at Halle, the semifinals at Nottingham and demolishing Garcia Lopez 6-2 6-4 6-0 in the first round here at Wimbledon.

Raonic played a single pre – Wimbledon grass court tournament, but it was a very successful event for him at Queens. He defeated Kyrgios, Vesely, Bautista Agut and Tomic, losing a single set en route to the final, where he was competitive against Andy Murray, but eventually lost in 3 sets, 7-6 4-6 3-6. He carried his solid form into Wimbledon beating Carreno Busta 7-6 6-2 6-4, without forcing too much.

Raonic leads the Head 2 Head against Seppi 2-0, but the two players never met on grass so far. Raonic should theoretically have the advantage of the green surface with his big serve, but Seppi is very competent on grass as well, so it`s hard to say if Milos Raonic really has an edge regarding the surface.

Seppi is in good form, he likes grass and he played great in his straight sets first round win. We know he can take the big boys in Grand Slams on his day (beat Federer at AO two years ago), so I see no reason for Raonic to expect an easy match here.

I believe Seppi will hold his own at least for a set or two and I wouldn`t be surprised if he actually snatches one. Raonic should eventually win once he gets some rhythm on the Seppi serve, but that might take some time.
