Andrey Rublev and Albert Ramos-Vinolas will square off for the second time in three weeks, after Rublev took care of the Spanish baseliner not long ago in Halle.
Rublev had a solid season on grass so far, proving his emergence as a Top 100 player despite being only 19 years of age. The Russian reached the quarterfinals in Halle, where he got past Ramos before losing to Khachanov, and had a good road so far at Wimbledon. Rublev passed qualifications with wins against McGee and Mathieu before beating Travaglia 3-2 in the first round on the main draw – though he was expected to beat the clay loving Italian clearer than that.
Ramos lost his only official grass court match this season to Rublev in the Halle first round, and he followed that up with 3 looses out of 3 matches in the Boodles exhibition tournament (Kohlschreiber, Ward, Shapovalov). The Spaniard is known to be very shy when it comes to grass court tennis and his 5-14 career record on the green proves it, but nevertheless he was able to defeat Thompson 6-4 6-4 7-6 in the first round here at Wimbledon.

While Rublev’s 3-2 first round win over Travaglia does not look impressive, fact is that Rublev had that match under control and should have won it 3-0 or 3-1 – not to mention the fact that Travaglia played pretty well. The young Russian is in good form on grass this season and he has top rhythm after playing 4 matches already in the last week, so that will help him against Ramos.
Ramos is definitely not at his best self on grass and his record this season on the green came to confirm that. He did beat Thompson 3-0 in the first round, but his 6-4 6-4 7-6 victory was not exactly dominant, and Thompson was visibly suffering of hangover after he beat Murray in Queens (lost his next 2 matches).
Rublev defeated Ramos only a few weeks ago on grass, showing that he is the superior player on the surface. One match can never tell the story about the other, but two weeks ago these two players lookers very evenly matched, with Rublev having the edge.
Not much has changed since then, and despite Ramos having the Grand Slam experience, Rublev should at least push this to five sets. I reckon it could go either way with Rublev as the real favorite, so my tip is Rublev to cover the +1,5 set handicap. Prediction: Andrey Rublev – Albert Ramos 3-6 7-5 6-4 6-7 6-4.
Pick: Rublev +1,5 set handicap
