Two of the best teams in Romania, Astra Giurgiu and Steaua Bucharest, will square off in an intermediate Liga 1 round on Wednesday.
Astra is in a pretty good moment right now. The team’s 8 points in the first 5 rounds is not a fantastic record, but Astra is just 2 points behind the first place and most importantly they performed very well in the Europa League, knocking out Inverness and West Ham. The 4-3 aggregate win against West Ham was truly excellent – even though the english side sent the second team in Romania (1-2), they played all their stars at home, where Astra got a 2-2 draw. Astra is a very talented side, good on offense and they scored at least 2 goals in each of the last 5 matches. The team is coming after a 3-1 win in Timisoara, despite resting many starters.
Unlike Astra, Steaua (9 points, 3rd place) is on the back of some poor results. The team was knocked out of the Champions League via a 2-4 away loss to Partizan and followed that with a 0-0 draw against their arch rivals, Dinamo, who are in rebuilding mode. However, these two matches were arguably the best Steaua played all season. They led Partizan 2-1 before having a player sent off in the 5th minute and against Dinamo they had many clear cut chances, deserving to score and win that match. The visitors are having some issues in defense but are solid up front and the Dinamo game was the first match in the last 8 where Steaua failed to score.

Astra will miss key defensive midfielder Seto, but they will be happy to have most regular starters rested, after shuffling the squad in the last match. Steaua will probably miss Stanciu and best defender Varela might be out as well.

Steaua is the slightly better team and will want to end the recent bad run of results, while Astra will feel this is a good chance to get a big win – they have better morale and are rested, while Steaua might feel some fatigue after playing two crucial, exhausting football matches in the last 7 days without resting players.
